From my 1982 4x4 with the "300/6" when the temperature dips below 20
degrees F ?! It only occurs when the temp drops below that & it is not a
"belt-squeal"! (It might be a manifold leak)? But, I am stumped! The water
pump is only 2 yrs old & the problem did not start untill after the install of
a "2 core radiator in the place of a triple core one"! The vehicle does not
overheat, & the radiator is not blocked by a panel of cardboard. But, I did
"upgrade" the vehicle with an engine rebuilt from a 1984 truck with the
"clutch-fan" feature! Any Ideas!? (It does run warmer than it did with a
triple core rad), but never passes the mid-point of the temp guage! The
"key" symptom to this is the fact that my truck did not whistle before the
radiator replacement! Please help me solve this mystery!
No, the speed or rpm does not seem to affect the "whistle"... the only
"constant" seems to be a temperature drop below 20 degrees F. Today
the temp was slightly above 20 & the noise went away once the engine
warmed-up to operating temp, but I only made a few short trips today.
But, when the temp stays below that temp even a 50 mile trip to parts
of Spokane & back... I am "serenaded" by the "whistle"!
If happening at idle you should be able to pop the hood and listen around I assume. Try a listening trick, use a big peice of hose like heater hose to your ear and move it around in around the radiator, you should be able to localize the noise doing this.
But,the source of the noise still eludes me! When, & if... winter ever ends?
(We have "global cooling") here, I will replace the intake/exhaust manifold
with a newer one I have in my parts inventory. The "I/E" manifold on the
newer engine is the original one that bears a few brazed repairs to the
typical cracks found on a early 80,s model. Btw, both my truck &
Pop,s use the same Carter 1 bbl carb with the 300 ci 6 cyl engine.
If all else fails, loosen the engine accessories and take the v-belts off. Start the engine and see if the noise has disappeared. Of course, do not run the engine like this for long, since the water pump will not be spinning.
Transmission, but vaccum hoses are a good "suspect" for the problem!
Thanks eveyone, & (if winter ever ends here in north Idaho) I will make a
thourough check of all vaccum hoses that are not in plain sight. As my
cruise control is controlled by a vaccum hose & it has failed as well! And
my back-up lights have stopped working, so I have a few "issues" to
address with "Ol Reliable", when my ol trusty toyota camry is restored. It
"was" a gently used 20 yr old that I had installed a rebuilt engine into until
a fool "pulled blindly out of a parking-lot in front of me & STOPPED! Now it
is a "Franken-Car" that went from a pampered 1990 model to a 1988,89,
90 & 91 model! "Johnny Cash, call your office"!
