I have a 1972 F-100 with a lot of issues. The one I am working on now is finding the wires that lead to the gas tank and gauges.
Is there a way to test the fuel float sending unit before I buy a aftermarket gauge for it? I have called around to various junkyards but non seem to have one like it.
What years and other ford models does the float/sender fit my 72? Any info you can provide is appreciated.
Here's how to test your fuel sending unit in a jiffy. Find the end of the wire that leads to the sending unit on your gas tank, and unplug it. Then turn your key to the "on" position. Take the end of the wire and ground it out good. You should see the gas gauge on the dash move over towards full. DO NOT LET THE GAUGE SIT ON FULL WITH THE WIRE GROUNDED OUT. You will burn out the gauge if you do. Once the gauge registers full, you can unground the wire. If your gauge has moved, then it is good. If not..then the gauge is bad, or your wire is broken. This same method can be used to test the engine temp gauge. CAUTION: do not ground the wire anywhere near an opening on the fuel tank,,,sparks and gas you know don't mix so well
