i have a 1984 ford truck the starter was grinding like the flywheel was missing teeth or the starter gear wasnt engageing true sometimes a whirl some sounds like hell replaced the flywheel yesterday put starter back on same problem tryed another used starter same thing my question is is this a starter problem or something else im out of money and need to fix it this time please help
its a 5.8 liter carburated the old flywheel had some damage to the teeth but didnt look all that bad not what u would expect considering the noise its a auto matic trans
graudually got worse until the truck wouldnt start i also replaced the ignition switch so now when you try to start the truck the starter grinds like it haveing a hard time turning the flywheel or just whirls like the starter nis out
That was my next question....how is it turning. Given what you've told me, I would look really closely at the starter solenoid mounted on the passenger side fender and the positive and ground cables. It sounds to me like you're not getting enough voltage to the starter that in turn is causing the starter drive to not fully engage, causing the grinding.
