My power supply damaged my HD, MB, FD, and Sound card.
I've been trying to get an old used board to work and it looks like I'll have to buy a new setup.
I'm looking at a Celeron chip and comparing it to the P4 chip and haven't found any site that compare the difference. I've never bought a 'strip down' chip before, but I've heard the the new celerons have all the MMX and other extentions in it already.
I'd be using it for programming, gamming etc under Win2000 pro
Think of it this way, you have a pentium and a celeron. Lets say they both are 750 Mhz. The celeron will do as well as the pentium as long as it is only doing one thing at a time. Celeron does not like to be multi tasked. This was how it was explained to me. And it is slow when you run more than one program. I would go for the pentium or even an AMD. I prefer AMD (i am in no way endorsing AMD here) mainly since its cheaper for the same performance. Hope this helps ya.
I have a P4 and it runs nicely, I have played around with Celeron's and for gaming it's a definate no, no. If you want performance but want to save a few bucks, go with an AMD XP chip. They have comprable performance, the only draw back is if you don't put the heat sink on just right and keep it clean of any dust/hair etc. it will overheat and melt, as my cousins did The P4 by nature runs a lot cooler as this is how it's designed. You should buy your stuff off the internet as it is much cheaper. Do a search for discount computer stuff....
