I tried to start the engine in my 1991 F-250 with tilt steering wheel, and there was unusual resistance turning the key. I tried a second time and there is now no resistance when trying to engage the starter. I hear the fuel pump run, and the dash lights come on, but the starter doesn't engage, and the automatic transmission shifter remains locked with the key in the on position. Is the lock cylinder bad? I took the shroud off where the column goes under the dash, and can see the actuator rod move as I turn the key.
You probably need to replace the actuator between the lock cyl and switch. VERY common problem on the 87-91 trucks. Available from your Ford dealer, part# E9TZ-3E715-B
Okay, thanks. I am at the point of pulling the steering wheel. I think I saw the bolts are #8x32. I took the two piece vinyl shroud off the column at the bottom of the dash, and I see the rod move up and down as the key turns. Do you think that's possible if the actuator is broken?
The bolts needed to pull my '91 F-250 steering wheel were 3 1/2" x 5/16" fine thread. If anyone was wondering. I first bought 2 1/2" which were too short, but the threads went right in by hand.
I had to order the actuator at 10 this morning. I went home and got the broken one out (used a hooked pick). Went back to the parts store at 3 and got the part. I put the lock cylinder in and found out there's a hole in the actuator that the hook on the rod goes in before driving the roll pin in over the rod. Got it right the second time. Putting the tilt mechanism together was the hardest part of reassembly. I'm so sure I got it right, but its not working. The wheel is stuck down. Everything else seems to work fine, so I'm gonna live with the wheel in the lower position till we get warmer weather. Any advice in the mean time would sure be appreciated.
