I put a Red Head on mine 6 months ago & paid about $400 too. If I remember shipping was like $20 bucks to send the core. Use a USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box & tape the dog out of it. Like m-chan said, get the new arm & nut. I spent 2 days looking for a puller that was massive enough to be able to get it off. 2 days searching & $225 later I got a puller now for life. I can pull pitman arm in 30 seconds now. My first Red Head was real tight so I got the luxury of doing it twice. Hardest part is getting the box up there and getting the 3 bolts started. My experience was night & day compared to the old & would recommend them even though I got a tight one. Good luck.
Well, I just looked up the part numbers with the information provided, and the part numbers I came up with, are 7C3Z-3504-ARM for the steering box, and 5C3Z-3590-AA for the pitman arm. You might want to call Tousely Ford, Partsguyed or Titus Will Ford Parts to see who will sell it you the cheapest. Don't forget to buy two 1 litre bottles of Mercon V.
Mercon V being the steering fluid...that I just had flushed? Oh well, that wasn't really too bad though.
m-chan68 - I appreciate your help, you didn't have to take the time out of your day to look that up for me, so I really appreciate it. You seem pretty convinced it's the steering box and from the way it feels, I tend to agree.
What do you think the whole deal would cost me?
- Price on steering box?
- Price on Mercon V?
- Price on labor?
On the labour end of the spectrum, you would be looking at between 2.5 to 3.5 hours x whatever the hourly labour rate is at the shop doing the install.
So, if my bro-in-law works at a tire & alignment shop, you think it's something he could do or do you really have to know these trucks? He gives me a cheaper rate

Remove the air cleaner housing and the driver side battery and tray, and it's just like replacing a steering gear on any other vehicle.
LOL just faster internet. Here in IL Ford dealer wants $390 labor & $120 for alignment for them to adjust your drag link. So its looking like around $850 IT
So Special Ed, would you recommend the Red Head over a stock replacement? Sounds like $330 stock is about like $400 from Red Head with their reputation of being better than factory and their warranty. Sorry for being all over the place, this is the last BIG thing I don't like about my truck (besides that it's not quite paid off). I want to try to get it done right at the best price.
I like mine & did extensive research before my purchase. I have heard of guys really going thru them Ford boxes but thats just what I read. Don't recall any better alternatives at the time.
