engine performance

hello guys i have a 81 F250 with a C6 trans and a 351m engine. I am putting new pistons and rings, main and rod bearing in it to build for my mud truck. just wondering what this engine had for HP and Torque from when it was new and what compression it should have when new. Also wondering what are the most effective mods you can do to them to make them work there best ect, timing chain, cam, carb ect.... it has a old motocraft 2 barrel on it now. just wondering what i should look into getting for it without getting into alot of money. thanks for your time...

i would suggest 4 bbl carb and intake manifold.

I wouldn't bother building a M engine but that's just me. If you are going to, find yourself a 400 and use that bottom end. May as well get some more cubes. Either way the heads could use a little cleanup and radiusing of the short turn as it's real sharp as cast. Get headers.

I've got a bone stock 400, just put a matching edelbrock carb and intake and it made a world of difference. I just use it for a daily driver, no mudding or anything.
