My fuel selector valve is shot and I need to replace it. The OEM pumps are over $200 around here, but I've been doing some research and came across the Pollak Motor-driven 6-port selector valve like you can get from JCWhitney. From what I've read, this is as close to a direct replacement as you can get (only changing out the wiring harness to make it work). Do any of you have any experience with these or have any other recommendations before I buy? I'd like to know if it's going to work or not before investing.
Well, got the part in last night from Parts Guy Ed. Everything looked like it did under the truck, so I got started. Everything was identical to the original with the exception of the wiring harness pigtail, which was considerably wider than the port on the new valve.
I figured I'd be replacing it anyway, so I took a dremmel to the pigtail and shaved off enough of both sides to get the contacts on the valve to go into the right slots on the pigtail, and it worked like a charm.
To my surprise, when I took it down to the station to get some fuel in the front tank that I hadn't been able to use, it was completely full! I had siphoned the fuel out of it several months ago to keep the fuel from being wasted or going stale, so it must have been filling from the rear tank through the bad valve. It makes me EXTREMELY curious as to what the fuel economy will be now since I was calculating in the 16.5-17.5 MPG range anyway. Should have seen the face of disappointment when I first switched over to the front tank and it read full. Thought I had screwed something up!
Anyway, thought I'd follow up with a post in case someone else was having the same issues. Thanks for the help, pjwoolw!
Are you sure the front tank was full, not calling u a liar, but did u test it or try putting more diesel in it? It just doesnt sound right that the rear tank would bleed of diesel into the front tank and fill it up over time. something just doesnt seem right here. but if it was good job on the fix, now get to modding lol.
Yes, most definitely. The gauge read full, but I took it to the station and put about 4 gallons it in and the pump kept shutting itself off. When I took it out, I could see the fuel in the filler neck... 110% full! When I turned the ignition on, the fuel gauge had moved beyond the full mark, indicating it was reading correctly and recognized the additional fuel.
Now unless my wife filled it up by mistake and won't fess up to it, that's about the only conclusion I could come up with on how the fuel got in there! Like I said, I had siphoned about 15 gallons out of it several months ago, so even if there was a little fuel in there, it shouldn't have been close to full.
Another crazy thing about it was that the truck seemed to run smoother after the valve was replaced. I'm wondering if it might have been stuck partially closed or something and wasn't getting good fuel flow or something (which might explain how the fuel got in the other tank). Regardless, I'm glad things are fixed and running good!
