6.9 problem

6.9 problem
i have a 1984 6.9 diesel, the problem is that if you start it sometimes it will run perfect and other times it will die and crank alot before restart, and then it will run perfect for a while and your going down the road and it acts like someone shut the key off it just dies. do i have a bad wire to the fuel solinoid or a bad fuel tank, it has a new filter under hood. please help!
