Question Aftermarket Water Temp Sending Unit

Hey ya'll. I've searched, and managed to hook up the transmission temp gauge, but when it comes to the water, I'm stuck. I have a 99 5.4 Eddie Bauer. ON the front crossover, there is a stanchion that comes off the crossover pipe that has a black hose hooked up to it that feeds over to the inlet elbow and attaches to the same hookup as the vacuum line for the passenger side PCV.

What is this thing, and do I need to keep it? I've never seen anything like it, so I'm very stumped.

Thanks in advance.

For any one else who might run into this, it is to heat the vapors coming from the PCV so that it stays in a gaseous state(?) Ford says it needs to stay, so a tee it is.
