Fuel Tank Vent Solutions?
I spent 45 minutes in 5 degree temps with 60 mph winds a few weeks ago trying to fill this thing up and I thought I was going to die! So I am now determined to solve this once and for all.
Now that I have my bed off I have been thinking more about how to solve my tank vent problem. I am thinking I will put a half inch 90 into the rollover valve opening on the rear and front tanks, but I have heard that that alone isn't enough vent. I am also considering drilling a second hole in each tank for a second half inch vent.
I know there must be some clever way to solve this so I am going to post up and see if someone a little brighter than me has any better ideas than adding a second vent.
I also want to eliminate the filler vent hose, and chisel out the filler neck to take a semi nozzle.
What if I tapped in a 3/4 inch vent at the base of the fill hose where it goes into the tank, would that help? I have seen some pretty elaborate fuel vapor plumbing setups but I want to keep it simple if possible.
The pinch fitting sounds like exactly the type of thing I want to use. I am going to hollow out the fill tube like you suggested and I will also chisel out the fill hole. Then I am going to run 2 half inch vents per tank. I am hoping that this setup will let me pump at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle! That would be awesome!

The pinch fitting isn't a bad idea, but beyond that, it works great. Also I used a steel nipple on the filler neck, and I think a PVC elbow on top of the tank as I couldn't find them in anything else.
I can't do a truck pump at full throttle, but I can do one at half and that's way faster than any small pump.
Funny thing is a lot of smaller pumps still click off on full even with the vent mod...I think it also depends on the pump nozzle placement, if I put it all the way in it always clicks off, if I do it about halfway in, it's fine.
Would you mind sharing a little bit more on your hose barb/90/pinch fitting setup for your vents? I wandered around ACE for 30 minutes trying to find something that might work but I left empty handed. We do have a Fastenall in town, maybe I should check there.

If none of that works, use google shopping and search for "tank vent".
I also picked up a 2 part epoxy especially made for bonding plastic to steel. BTW, these PCV elbows are made from nylon so you could technically use JB Weld if you wanted to. I went with the epoxy because I have used it in the past and have found that as long as surface prep is good, it is a very permanent solution.
While I was there, I got 8 foot of fuel rated 19/32 (about .6 inch) hose. It fits tightly over the PCV hose barb.
My plan is to experiment with drilling holes in scrap sheet metal until I find the best way to put a hole in the tank, that the PCV elbow will fit tightly into. As you can see in the pic, the elbow has a nice lip that should give a perfect surface to epoxy to. I measured tank to bed clearance and this should work great. On the rear tank there is a small recessed area (similar to the recessed area where the rollover valve is located) that I am planning to use. There are several good locations on the front tank. I think 1 of these almost .6 inch hoses per tank should flow a ton of air. You can blow through the hose as hard as you can with no restriction. My plan for hose routing might include drilling a hole in the plastic filler neck housing (the housing that bolts to the bed) and sticking about an inch of it through there. That way I can have the satisfaction of feeling the air vent while I pump if I want to.
I will post up when I am done with some pics.
If you don't have problems I'm surprised. I found some pumps that I could use without too much difficulty with the stock setup, but not many.
Question, have you ever used a "big truck" pump to fill your truck? Even with my vent setup I can only run one of those at about halfway, but it fills the truck FAST!
