This thing just shuts down pull over and restart it runs fine until it does it again. No CEL I have even took it in and had a dealer check it nothing. Checked the fuel pressure today key on engine off 45 psi engine on 55 psi. I have changed plugs , fuel filter and air filter. this winter it has done it less, we have had some 60 degree days this week and it got worse. so I'm thinking fuel pump relay ( the cheapest part). Others have suggested fuel pump drive where is this located. I was under the truck looking for this drive and bumped the rear right wheel it moved quite a bit grabbed it and you can shake it checked the lugs they are tight so I'm thinking wheel bearing. How hard are they to change. Checked the parts store 300 bucks that is a new hub and bearing togather. We bought this used 20k on it it now has 112k this thing eats tires we have had it to the dealer and a good frame shop they can find nothing wrong it now needs it fifth set of tires.
Fuel pressure should be about 40 PSI so it looks like your FP regulator is shot.
You should not be able to move the rear tires as you've described. Since the dealer and frame shop didn't find this loose wheel, then I say go to another dealer or frame shop. They obviously don't know what they're doing.
If you did the relay, I might look at the pump itself next. Being intermittent trouble, I have had that before. Just a weak electric motor. Sometimes run, sometimes not...
I just got a 2004 earlier this year. Posted some questions on here and turned out that driver's rear wheel bearing/hub was bad. Mine made a ton of noise. No slop or movement, but sounded like I was running aggressive MUD tires. I even wondered if that was cause, but it was hub. I got lucky and found a bone yard close by that had a wrecked on from a 25k mile Expedition. It took me a little over an hour to swap it out. They cut the ABS sensor, so I had to pull an allen bolt to put my old into the new hub. I think I would look more at the mounting bushings for the control arms and parts like that around the sloppy wheel, IF you aren't hearing a good amount of "road noise" at highway speeds. But, just keep shaking until you narrow it. Check your boneyards if it is hub, may get lucky. Anyone want to sell their running boards off an '04??
Thanks for the replies.
Alloro we took it to the dealer and then to the frame shop about the tire wear several years ago, not the wheel bearing that I found this past weekend.
Fuel pump drive anyone know about these if they even exsist. I have been told they go bad more often than the pump it self.
As for the fuel pump relay. I took this from Honda they have a relay that go's bad . People think it the pump and it is not on most Honda's. I have changed a couple my self.
Fuel Pump drive would mean the fuel pump it self. Inside the gas tank. I don't think it is weak from what you have said your pressure reading are. Alloro may be on the right track with a fuel pressure regulator. Have you pulled the vacuum line off of the regulator. Is it dry or is there gas in it. It should be dry. If there is gas, replace it. Most of the time when this happens, the vehicle runs very poorly and goes through gas like crazy. You really need to get a fuel pressure reading when it dies. If there is pressure there and it is within specs, the relay, pump and regulator are fine. I think you have an electrical issue. A sensor possibly. A sensor will not necessarily throw a CEL if it goes bad. It has to fail a few times in order for it to do so. However, I don't think your problem is fuel related. Good luck.
Thanks again for the information. I will continue to track the shut down problem after I get the wheel bearing fixed.
Tomorrow is wheel bearing day. A local parts store can get me a life time warranty Timken bearing for 258.00$ We were having dinner tonight and she reminded me a few weeks ago she came home complaining of a noise in the back when she backed up. But as usal it would not do it with me in the car.
Any hints or helpful tips in changing the bearing and hub? It's the right rear.
Had to buy a 36mm deep deep socket to take the axle nut off. I have never seen an axle stud stick out so far. The rest was easy it took one hour. The hardest part was torquing the four bolts that hold the hub on. Just not much room to work with a torque wrench.
She drove it today first trip 16 miles no problems. Later left again 25 miles no problem. Started to return home about every 5 or 6 miles it would shut down. Pull over put it in park it would restart and go another 5 to 6 miles. CEL light came on at some point when I ask (you know women) i don't know. She got home put the fuel pressure guage on it. Let it run and ran it up to 2500 or so for an hour drove it around just few minutes, no shut down. Going take it tomorrow and get the code read.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CEL the dreaded o2 sensor bank on1 sensor 1. I no this is not the problem. Im going to throw this out just to see what you think plugged cat or cats?????? It done it again today ran fine for about 20 miles then it starts to do the shut down shuffle.
Well I was told today by another Ford owner it could be the chipped key going bad. He had a service writer tell him he see's it when vehicles start getting 100k or better on them. So I got the seldom used spare key and put it on her key ring. Wait and see what happens.
I don't want to jinx it . But 2 days no shut downs. I drove it Thrusday to work 52 miles round trip no problems. She drove it today about 70 miles round trip no problems.
