V8 Excursion?

Im looking to buy an excursion here real soon and im going to mainly be using it to tow a toy hauler between 21-26ft (havnt baught it yet). it will be drivin but not every day. mainly as a tow rig and every so often to work or on bad weather days. Im wanting to buy a 2wd and my dad is trying to talk me into the v8 gas engine. but it doesnt seem to me that it will be enough for a tow rig for the trailer. he thinks it will. He drives a 07 duramax so its not an issue for him. I was thinking at least the v10. what do yall think would be my best option??

thanks alot,
Cole

First, welcome!

Second, V10. You will never kick yourself and say, "Man, this thing just pulls too well."

You say that the Ex is mainly to be used as a tow rig. What towing conditions do you plan to encounter...flat highways, hills, total weight? What kind of performance do you expect from it. If I remember correctly my old Ex weighed in at about 7400 pounds (with fuel)...it was a 4x4 with a V-10. A 2wd with a 5.4 might be about 500 pounds or so less. I personally would not want to tow with a 5.4...not that it can't be done...I just like the extra power of the V-10.

Thanks alot for the input guys. i was thinking the same thing. it just doesnt seem like the v8 would be able to pull the trailer with any sort of authority and going to the dunes and whatnot i will definatly want the authority to do what i want while towing my rig.

is there any sort of issues that are common with the v10 model? tranny, engine, ect??

thanks,
Cole

A 5.4L powered Excursion would barely be able to get out of it's own way, much less tow anything with authority.

You asked for opinions, so in my opinion, a V10 is your only option, short of going with a diesel.

If you want a towing machine get the diesel. Besides the engine you also get the better transmission that is specifically made for towing. The gassers are good too. Just a matter of what you want.

Tranny was the same gas to diesel until the 6.0l diesel.

If You Do end up going with the V8 , you can accomidate for the lack of power with a rear end gear swap out. If I had a choice I would definitely have the diesel, it cannot be beat by the gas motors. Deisels fetch higher dollar though. I have a V8 motor in mine and pull a 6,000 lb boat and havent really had any issues except for the lack of power compared to the V10, but im not usually in any hurry to get to where I need to be going when I have that boat behind me...lol Good luck with your choice.

I have the v8,it I don't regret not getting the v10 because 90% of the time I'm not towing.I have pulled 5klbs no problem and getting decent mpg too. If you can swing the extra $$ get the diesel
