if you do a search, you will see maybe 100 postings about this subject. the 85-87 6.9l is the superior motor. has all the upgrades of the block and rockers as the 7.3l but the stronger cylinder walls of the 6.9l. the 7.3l is more prone to cavitation and under heavy boost, the walls flex causing the cavitation to come though much faster.

The big issue with the 7.3 is the thin cylinder walls. This makes them more susceptible to cavitation. This also means that they shouldn't be bored out during a rebuild. If you have a block that just needs a honing, and doesn't have cavitation pin holes, that would be fine to build...
