I had a similar decision when our oldest of three children went to college. We have had all of the typical problems with our 6.0, just like the ones you listed. We decided to keep ours. It is an excellent travelling vehicle and we use it every other week or so to haul our high school kids to games all over northern California. We are happy with our decision to keep the 6.0. We got 17.7 mpg on a trip up to Mt Bachelor, Oregon last week.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, but if I do decide to sell it, what would be a fair asking price. The specs for the truck are on the first post and in addition it has had the oil/filter changed, fuel filters changed, transmission flushed/filled and coolant flushed/filled 2,400 miles ago. I also changed the thermostat this past weekend. The tires, wheels, and ball joints have 6,000 miles on them. I am the second owner and the truck is in good condition with a clean Carfax. The Ford DieselCare warranty is transferrable and is good till sometime in November of this year. Thanks.
I would keep it. We have a F150, Expedition and the Excursion. 99 percent of the time when we go as a family we all pile into the Excursion (aka da bus). Reason- it is roomy and comfortable with more than plenty of room for bags and suitcases. When we go camping it tows like crazy and we can put all the chairs and outdoor stuff in the back when weather threatens. When i go to the lumber yard i know a 4x8 sheet of oak fits in the back and will not get damaged and also 12 foot trim fits in. Best of all it is paid for. Even if gas goes up i still can run the Excursion regardless seeing i do not have a payment. But to that I will be running my 93 honda nighthawk alot this summer!
2000 Excursion ltd v10 2wheel wonder
2000 Expedition Eddie Baueer 5.4 4x4
1999 F150 4.6 4x4
2000 Grand Prix for fun i live on a real curvy road
My 2000 V10 has about 127000 miles on it. The only thing wrong with it is the drive leather seat looks like hell, a few bumps and bruises in the sheet metal. Drive ablity is like new. Just do all the maintenance. I am hoping to get at least another 100000 out it before it is replaced.
the resale market for these is getting smaller and softer with gas prices going up ....
Mine is paid for and running fine @ 130k....
of course it has some things I want to do to it, after all if's 6 years old now and daily driven by ME and my sports car racer wife
recent opinions are changing on the need to remove the egr, with proper maint. it is not as popular to change the design of the system like that.
good luck on your decision.... just stay away from those life changing moments that make you say "I wish I had (or hadn't)....."
Keep it. you know how it has been taken care of. If you buy a different one you have no idea if the person/s before you took care of the maintenance. I wish I could go back to 05 and buy the Excursion instead of the Expedition we bought. Hindsight is 20/20. Keep it!
I had a 2000 X V10 that I loved. It was certainly cheaper than my 6.0L. I use the current X for family travel and to tow a 10,000#, 31' travel trailer. For my needs, although cost is an issue, I will try to stay with the 6.0L. I only have 85K on clock and try to keep mileage below 10K a year. I have had no issues, thus far, letting is sit during the week and having fun on the weekends. but, who knows, my time could be coming!
You have a lot of money invested already to make it the way you want it.
The diesel will hold it's value especiallly if it's not racking up the miles.
You'll be disappointed pulling your travel trailer with a V10 after having done it with a diesel...
You'll have to pay taxes when you purchase the new to you Ex.
You won't know the history of the the new to you Ex.
You've already replaced many of the problem parts with the 6.0
Those are all the reasons I'd keep what you have.
I'd run a voltage test on the FICM before your warranty runs out. It's another expensive problem area with the 6.0 that you might need to have addressed.
The main reason would be reliability and the fact that I don't drive it nearly as much anymore. If the warranty would not have covered my last repairs, I would be out $4,500.00. I guess with the lack of use, I'm worried about it happening again out of warranty. Thanks for everyone's opinion so far.
I know your concerns about the 6.0, I had a 06 F350 Larait 6.0(beatuiful truck) til the problems started, won't go throught a long story but after 2 engine pulls for oil leaks and two other times in the shop for less major oil leaks, I decided that it was enough, the warranty expires 5/11/11 so I sold it. All this happened in the span of 56,00 miles. My friend wants to sell his to but he has dumped so much into it he doesn't know what to do. Now any truck/car from any maker can have problems, and alot don't, I just got 1 that I wasn't sure about and as you stated my big thing is out of pocket expenses once it's out of warranty. I really wanted a 05 X, but the ones that I found just didn't feel right, so I settled on an 03 X V10. Do I miss my 6.0, sure, but I got the 03 Limited for less than 13K, it's in excellent shape and the best thing, guess you could call it that, set up a X account with the remainder of the money from the sale so I have a cushion of 16K if something takes a crap on me on the X. If yours is paid and you feel comfortable--Keep it--as everyone has said sounds as if you have covered most trouble areas
Keep it. You've addressed most of the problems that are likely to bite you. It's hard enough to find one clean ex like you have, finding another with a V10 specifically will be difficult too. And I don't know about you, but it's hard for me to sell one vehicle and buy another and come out ahead financially unless it's not as nice. The 6.0 will tow better and get better fuel mileage despite diesel prices.
If you're worried about letting it sit just start it up and let it run or drive it somewhere once a week. I have 6 vehicles and only have 1 with me at school during the week. Every weekend I drive at least one or two of the others and the ones I don't drive I start up on Sunday, let them get to running temperature, and either take them for a short spin or just shut them back off. I know it costs a lot to drive a diesel daily currently (as I do), but it doesn't cost much to start up once a week and let it warm up, and it's priceless when towing. You also get fuel mileage not even comparable to a V10 when empty.
Keep it! You will NEVER be able to buy another vehicle the size of an excursion, with the truck like/safe feel of an excursion, that is as capable as the excursion. Newer diesels are becoming ever more complicated, emissions regulated, and thus more expensive to fix. I would hate to pay the bill for a big repair on the new 6.7 once out of warranty! The V10 is a great motor, but you will absolutely miss the diesel when pulling or traveling through the mountains. Cough up ~1500 to put in headstuds, maintain your EGR, get some custom tunes. Then you basically have a brand new truck considering your front end is new.
Thanks everyone for your advice and opinions but I went with the minority and am now the owner of a 2002 V10 limited. A couple of things made up my mind. The biggest was that I was reading a few threads about people that had their head gaskets replaced by Ford and that they failed again (a few even with studs). They were saying to demand (pay for it yourself if needed) that the heads be sent out to a machine shop to have them shaved if needed as well as check to any cracks. They said that the Ford techs will basically put a straight edge on it and call it good if they don't see any problems. I know for a fact that mine were not sent out and that issue would bother me for the entire time I owned the truck. I was also thinking about the injectors and FICM issues. The other thing is that I found a V10 with the factory features that I wanted. It is in great condition with 30,000 miles less than the diesel and has had plugs changed recently. It has the 4.30 gears with LS and captain chairs in the second row which is what I wanted. I got to keep the RAS, say bar and tires/wheels from the old rig and I now have several thousand dollars to do a few things to the new X as well as start a savings account for future repairs. It will need ball joints but I figured that in to the negotiations. I'm sure I left some money on the table but this Excursions fits what I want it to do now better than the diesel. I just took it out for a test run hooked up to my travel trailer to see how it compared to the diesel. I live in a very hilly area so I was able to test it out pretty well. It definitely does not have the pulling power of the diesel at the lower end, but I was not expecting it to. I was surprised how well it did pull once I got the rpm's up and I think it will be fine for the small number of times I pull the trailer every year. It is definitely a gas hog - my overhead console read 7.5 mpg for my test pull when my diesel would be 11.5 for that same trip - although both these numbers could be off. Only time will tell if I made the right choice but it's mine now so I'm going to enjoy it as much as I can.
with the v10 you will be between 3000 and 4000 for rpms with overdrive off. I have 3.73 for gears and my average gas milage for towing is about 9.0 by the counsol(Lie -o- meter). gas pump calculations is 8.0. with the v10 you will need to plan a little before the hills. Good luck with your new purchase.
