so i installed my new f5 chip the other day! all was well until i got in the freeway in the 100h setting and got on the throttle... it cut out and check engine light came on.. would not start back up.. i removed the chip.. runs fine... i had been driving it for 2 days off and on around town no problems switching between tunes or running poorly.. in fact it ran great and had a ton more power.. but the problem came from the high speed..i am thinking...? i am going to try to get a scanner on it today to get a code. i am just posting this to see if anyone has ever had a problem similar to this? also let me say that diane from dp tuner is being very helpful emailing me back and forth even when they are not at the shop working... great customer service.. i am sure they are going to figure this problem out for me. i don't want to seem like i am unhappy with the chip... when it was working i loved it and the truck ran smooth! sorry for the long post..
Yeah the engine turned off.. still had power..lights and tuner were still aluminated.. I could change settings on the tuner.. I tried putting it in no start and taking it back out.. with the key on it shows check engine light, will crank but not fire... take the chip out, runs like it should. I am heading to find a scanner to get the code right now.
No codes I plugged a scanner in with the chip uninstalled it said I had no codes stored.. I put the chip in and the scanner could not link up.. just to be clear. When the chip is removed there is no check engine light and runs fine.. chip installed, check engine light on, crank but no fire. I emailed diane with what I have found out. I am sure I will get a response from her shortly!
I used one from schucks I believe it was a obdII.. it linked but said no codes? And it wouldn't link with the chip installed.. I have read that those scanners don't rread our trucks, but I thought since it linked it worked? But I don't know...what scanner shoud I use?thanks for the help.
So it looks like I am experiencing an unlikely accurance? Since nobody has responded with any similar issuses in the past. On the scanner issue, anybody have any suggestions on how to get a reading? I guess I could always take it to a shop to get a good scanner? Thanks
Get ahold DP and tell them what's up. Transmission shops usually have scanners that should read our codes. Might be cheaper. Its also possible that someone near you may have a scanner. Check or post in one of the local chapters on this forum.
I dont think you are going to get a code from the PCM. The problem doesnt seem to be in the PCM. That is why it will run when the chip is not in and then you cant communicate when it is installed.
The cheaper scanners cannot retrieve history codes but my guess would be that even one that can retrieve history codes isnt going to show you anything either.
DPtuners seem to have good customer service so they will take care of you but it is frustrating when you think you are making an upgrade and it ends up being more work.
I had just tried to re-flash mine with a custom tune from Edge and it fried my PCM, I had to replace my PCM so at least your not in that postion.
I am talking with dp off and on.. they were hoping to know a code.. but I will just have to wait till Monday to get to a scanner.. oh well, I am just hopefull that it is fixable, finally having put a chip in my truck it didn't take me long to fall in love with new found power.. it awakened all the pipe dreams of injectors and......who knows!
Your right stubborn, it kinda sucks to have a little hick-up like this.. but from the little bit I have been in contact with dp tuner, they are very nice and try to help however they can I am confident they are going to figure this out! I would like to at least give a higher end scanner a shot and see if I can get a code to hopefully help them out alittle. And I'm sorry to hear about your problems.. never fun to drop a few hundred just to get back to running, without any upgrading!
Just an update on this thread. I am back up and running with the chip! I can't say enough about the folks at dp tuner. I ended up just sending jody my pcm and chip so he could inspect both items and it turns out I must have slightly overcleaned the terminals so the chip lost connection.. but jody went ahead and reflashed my pcm to the stock setting (just to cover all the bases)and re-tinned my terminals. Now I am able to rip around! The tunes are great! I went ahead and got the drive thru tune, just wanted to post up I don't think it is worth it on our trucks, it does get abit quieter but it only idles about 75rpm lower I would save the money and get a differnent tune..imo...
