22 MPG's @ 72 MPH = aftermarket 3.08's and flat land to me.
if they are stock, then you've got 3.55's for sure,as this extremely hard to believe fuel economy couldn't be achieved with a set of 4.10's revving up at 72 MPH.
have you confirmed the ODO? what's your location? do you have a turbo?
how was fuel economy measured? was this kind of fuel economy measured consecutively or just a one time deal?
a fill up error with one reading could very easily explain such a peak.what was the following tank's reading?
was this back in '89 by the way or yesterday? fuel has changed a little since then.
when reporting 18+ MPG's from these heavy trucks(especially this time of year, with winter blend fuel)...........there's going to be questions and skeptics like myself, of such reports.
the trip was from new jersey to sout carolina. not sure of that distance but it was a bone stock truck non turbo. tes he fillups were not false or messed up. My dad fills the tank up the filler neck to the same spot each time in accuratly measeures the distance with the odometer and mapping it out. he got 21 on the way home on the same route.
Great info guys. It looks like 60MPH is the sweet spot for mileage on these trucks.
How hard is it to change the gears?
I would love a Gear Vendors over/under but it costs as much as a truck! I don't think I would make my money back on it.
I did an experiment on a long flat stretch of road between AZ and NM. I drove one leg at 60 mph and the next at 75 mph. There was absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in mpg. It was 17 mpg all day long. Same for the whole round trip from Flagstaff AZ to Santa Fe NM and back...
1986 F350 Crew Cab 4X4
6.9L, T19, Gear Vendor under/overdrive
4.10 gears, stock wheels
35,000 on rebuild, new IP
Easy on the skinny pedal

slow this combo down to 50/55 and you would see her economy jump up for ya.
David85 finally listened and tried it,and look what happened.
I disagree that may apply to your particular set up or because of the grades you climb altitude etc. (does make a difference ) I drove 50 55 for years because that was the speed limit when it was raised to 70 My mileage didn't change over the same roads I just got there faster I have been hearing that piece of fiction since the reduced the speed limit in the 70s to"save Gas" It may have been true on some under powered cars but did not apply to any car or truck I had access to. Usually I get the best results when I can set the cruse and let it alone what ever the speed.
The truck in my sig gets 13.6 on winter fuel (5-10min idle in the morning), and 15.8 on the summer stuff. I dont drive like an idiot and usually I look down to find my self going five UNDER the speed limit. Those were last years figures. Now I have a rebuilt IP and tommorrow I'm putting on 4 fresh 255/85/16's which visually apear not much wider than the 235's but are 1.5" taller which by the charts I've read will make me run 4% faster than what the spedo reads.
Firstly, I love the 1911 in your avatar. Looks like a nice Colt.
Secondly, I hear people are getting pretty good bumps in MPG after replacing IPs and injectors. Give us a shout back once you get the new IP installed and benchmarked. It would be a good real-life example of what MPG benefits a new IP brings.
The tires will make a difference. It is just mathematics when going to a larger diameter tire. None the less, it is good info for those who are looking to squeeze mileage.
i won't know for a few weeks what the tires do for my mpg's, and idealy I'd like to wait till summer before I make a definite claim on the IP since now I do ALOT of idling as compared to summer. I dont think i'll ajust the speedo, I'll just add 4% to my trip readings.
looks like i should figure just for a 33 inch tire. Cooper doesnt list their revs per mile, just that the tire is 33.2" tall. I wonder if that 4% is constant all around or just for the distance; I.E- would my spedo read 4% slower than I'm actually going?
definitely a differnent story with me!! haha. When i keep to my game plan i do very well.
1989 7.3 with C6 and 4.10's. Running empty with my old pump and new injectors i would fetch an average of 14mpg's.
Now with new pump and gresh gp's and new controller and my very new injectors i get nearly 18mpg average. My last tank gave me 16.9mpg because i cant keep my foot out of it haha. Its timed to 8.5btdc. Its running like a beast. My intake is custom, my exhaust is custom. Its a custom result for a C6 as anyone will tell you. When i can romp on it off each light and still grap 17 almost, yeah im zeroed in to where i want to be!
