I have a 02' Excursion V-10 3.73 gears. I tow a 34' Scarab(10,500lbs) Mostly tow 10 miles one way. We do a couple trips a summer of 75 miles one way. Will I be risking damage to the vehicle by being over the capacity? I did the local towing previously with a GMC Yukon with a 350 3.73 rear end and never had any transmission/Engine problems.(Tow capacity of 6,800lbs) I assume there is a bit of under rating these vehicles these days for liability reasons. I did my long distance towing with a 77' 3/4 ton chevy 350 2wd 3.73 and towed good just low on power( emissioned out- low compression motor only 170hp) In the owners manual it is rated for 12,000LBS!!!!!!!! SO WHAT GIVES NOW DAYS. Part of it I think is the factory under rates to sell the high profit Diesels and V-10's? WHAT ARE YOUR OPINION'S??????
Personally, I don't the truck will have any problem getting it to move. Stopping is the big concern...
Having said that, you need to realize that if you are involved (not even at fault) in an accident, you will be in big trouble for being over the limit. The insurance companies will see to that...
