People get all excited about playing the lotteries and potentially getting that big prize but don't really understand the math involved.

The Florida Lottery started in 1988. It's Lotto Prize, along with New York's, were the two biggest prizes in the country at that time. They both drew once-a-week.

If you were to have "invested" $100/week into either of those Lotto games from the time you were 20 and quit 50 years later when you retired at 70, you'd have won back less than 1/4 of what you'd paid in. It would have been 70 lifetimes before you'd have statistically won the grand prize. Later changes to the game made it 100 lifetimes.

So if your ancestors had started playing the lottery at the level described above, back when they were building the Egyptian pyramids, your family would likely have won "the big one".

Or if you'd have put that $100/week into a retirement account, you'd have retired a millionaire. And wasn't that your goal in the first place?

It sort of makes me wonder with Californians winning some of the latest Powerball's.
Maybe they buy a lot of tickets? OR IS IT SILICONE VALLEYS CAPABILITIES.
