you probably wont be much happier with anything else, the 300 I6 is a very strong engine. And it will get OK fuel mileage....

down side to this engine. with proper maintenance, expect 300,000 plus before any major work. I have heard of them going as high as 500,000 miles w/o a rebuild. I currently have two of these. One of them has almost 200,000 on it and is still very strong.

i have a 4.9 with 265 000 km's on it and its pretty strong. It'll lay some rubber and gets decent milage oh it has a awsome torque curve. Overally i would never trade it for a 302 maybe a 351...

I have 140,000 miles on mine. Only major work I had is a water pump replacement. Overall great engine and a strong workhorse. One downside is that the the big six isn't exactly a speed demon. I love my 300. I would only trade it for a 351 or 460.

One of the best engines ford ever made. I assume from the year that it is fuel injected. If you look at the numbers you will see that it puts out more torque than the 5.0 and that it is pretty close to the 5.8. Not really a surprise since inline engines produce more torque at lower RPMs; right where you need it in a truck. Maybe thats why Chevy put an inline 6 in the new Envoy and Trail Blazer and they are putting an inline 5 in the new Colorado. The horsepower numbers are very close too. I often wonder if Ford didn't down play them abit. Mine was in a 83 and it was a nice grey color. Enjoy it and have a good time. If you are a performance nut check out Clifford Performance. They are the inline kings and they sell parts for the 4.9. Did I mention that you can actually work in the engine compartment without bumping your head or knuckles every time you turn around.

Ford put a smaller throttle body on the 4.9 so It didnt put out more power than the 5.0, Why would a customer pay more when the Base truck engine puts out more power than the optional engine? Marketing. I do think ford downplays the 4.9 specs a bit.

I think that it's a macho thing too. People think they have more cajones if they have more cylinders. Gear heads know the diff.

Question 4,9 up and downs

I HAVE A f150 1990 WITH A 4.9, IT HAS DUAL TANKS FOR GAS. tHE TANK IN THE BACK PASSED THE GAS TO THE TANK IN THE FRONT. I INSTALLED A NEW VALVE THAT GOES IN THE MIDDLE OF BOTH TANKS, SO BOTH TANKS DELIVER FUEL. BUT IT DIDNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. tHE FRONT PUMP GETS VERY NOISY, IT WORKS FOR A WHILE AND THEN THE ENGINE STALLS. WHEN I SWITCH IT TO THE REAR TANK, THEN IT WORKS BUT IT SENDS THE FUEL TO THE TANK IN THE FRONT, AND THE TANK IN THE FRONT FILLS UP AND SPILLS. BOTH PUMPS FOR BOTH TANKS ARE ALSO NEW. ANY HELP??

The only true way to fix this is to replace both pumps. Even if one pump still works Ford recommends both pumps be replaced. I have an 90 f250, I removed the rear tank and capped off the fuel line. I can still go an easy 200 miles on a tank, what more do you need? Also makes a nice spot for the spare tire.

Snyper
Do you have a fuel pump on the frame rail under the driver's floorboard? If so, your problem is in the dual-function reservoir mounted inside the L frame rail just forward of the rear axle.

If not, the problem is in the front Fuel Delivery Module (pump/sender assembly).

Either way, the Haynes manual explains how the system works and what to do.

I have a 92 with an 300 I6 and a 81 with one.I never herd anybody complain about these engins.The 92 has 160k on it and the 81 has 240k on it.

Actually with the exception of the 56 4x4 frankenstine truck I had with a 351 in it I have never had a truck that didnt have an inline 6 in it.

I believe there is a recall on your dual tank problem, any ford dealership i believe is supposed to fix it for free.

Have a 94 2WD with the 4.9L, gotta love it, can pull move than the truck weighs!!! Wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis but I had an occasion when I had to pull a loaded trailer that weightd approx. 7300 lbs. She did it, coulnd't run the ac but managed 50-55 on flat land running in 4th (Ed04 Automatic), had to run in 3rd for the hills though!

Most expensive repair to date... UJoints (At 165,000 miles) and radiator (at 120,000 miles), keep the oil changed and don't abuse it, you'll go 200,000+
