Gauges

I am looking into getting gauges and I don't have money falling out of my pockets. For the 6.0 what is absolutely vital?? I don't do very heavy hauling in fact my heaviest load is well under 4000 pounds once a year so I think I've ruled out the transmission temperature gauge.

I am thinking of these three:

EGT
Oil Temp
Water Temp

I was thinking of fuel pressure but I can save $200 by going without it. Is it absolutely vital to have the fuel pressure? Please let me know. Thanks.

Get a scangauge 159 autozone, will not do egt and fuel. Other than that it reads everything that is on your obd port, for the money you can't do it in reg gauges

Thanks wulfman. I definitely appreciate the reply. I would rather have analog gauges and I definitely would like to know my EGT's and temps since I will be tuning in the future. Is there anything other than on my list that I should pay close attention to?

Look at the GlowShift 3 in 1 diesel gauges. They can be had for under $200 and will cover boost, EGT and either trans temp or fuel pressure, whichever you prefer.

3in1 Diesel Combo Gauges

I use both analog and a Scan gauge, btw. I figure why pay for water and oil temp sensors when they're already built into the engine and OBD system.

If you plan on putting a tuner on it, I would reconsider the TFT gauge. Now if you are going to keep it stock, then you probably could get away without TFT.

You know, if it hadn't been for my fuel pressure gauge, I would have never known when my stock pump was being taxed too much by my modified injectors. Not getting enough fuel to the injectors can lead to a hefty repair bill.

So let's see, save the $200 or use that $200 to buy insurence for your injectors and exponentially increase your chances for catching fuel issues before they lead to hefty injector repairs?

Also, once again, if you are planning on tuning the truck, I would for sure not go without a FP gauge, but unlike the TFT gauge, fuel pressure is a no debate gauge. Too many problems that can be avoided with a good fuel pressure gauge.

I don't know if you are planning on tuning, but it wasn't eliminated as a possibility(at least not in this thread). Just threw that out there just to make sure.

I will be tuning in the future. You are right about the fp gauge. Are there any other gauges you can recommend?

Does the scangauge read oil temp and psi?

Yes it reads oil temp but not not oil pressure.

SGII will read EOT and ECT, John.

I also watch Voltage and ICP. I cycle through to check IPR and TFT(XMN) once in a while.

ScangaugeII will read MAP (manifold atmospheric pressure).
MAP can be used to calculate BOOST..
Normal MAP is 14.7 (sea level). So, if MAP is 25:
25-15 = 10 PSI boost!

The scangaugeII lets you look @ tons of sensors for when troubleshooting issues, so it's well worth it.

Depending upon your model/year certain sensors are not available though.
Things like voltage or boost come to mind as not universally available.

Here is a great idea that I found yesterday....

Whew and thanks for the response gentlemen !

I thought about ordering this:
Amazon.com: BlendMount Designed for ScanGauge II: Automotive

but thought I'd try just mounting on top the steering column with velcro for now
and look at options once I use it for a bit...

Will be begging for "pieces o' your brain" WHEN I can't figure the setup out...

just finished my home theater and network,
so maybe this ole' programmer type can figure out one more lil puter....

I put my ScanGauge on the steering column for a while and it worked well but the velcro eventually came loose due to the curved surface. Right now I have it mounted underneath the headlight switch, which is less obtrusive and holds on better, but I have to lean my head a little to the left to see it because it's partially blocked by the steering wheel. I think I'm going to fabricate a mount to put it under the fuel gauge, just to the left of the steering column. I'd consider the Blend Mount but I have my Isspros in a overhead gauge pod there already.

BTW, I believe there's a coupon for the Blend Mount in the ScanGauge package (or there used to be, anyway), so you might want to wait for that before ordering the one from Amazon.

I'm looking @ the F-650 dash mod for 3 switches & Fuel Pressure
and something else TBD. I will loose the cubby where I mount the
scanguageII, so the blendmount is my next option.
