Well, this is my first, but not last, post to the fourms. I'm 16 and managed to get a 1984 f-350 with a 6.9, which is cracked
But anyway, i'm considering buying stacks for it, and i dont know of any kits for my truck, and i was wondering if i would have to make a custom one, and sorry im kinda new to diesels
Please for the love of god do not put stacks on one of these sexy rigs. Believe it or not it is true 8/10 times that I've ever seen a dude with a jacked to the sky truck with stacks, they are all below 5'9. I've observed atleast 8 of those trucks in the past year. However, to keep your thread on topic you can use a hollowed out drive shaft or purchase them from a muffler store.
I've never understood the attraction of stacks or straight pipes on a pickup, gas or diesel. Stacks get in the way of hauling stuff in the bed, and tend to be noisy inside the cab, and straight pipes tend to get the attention of local LEO's.
The best advice I can give is to get the truck running properly first before considering any optional changes.
You might find fixing that 6.9 is more than you figured....
AND you might find that the brakes need repair, tires might be a little worn or a miriade of other little saftey things that need to be repaired, again before spending money on a optional item. Of course, if you have a unlimited budget, then spend away!
And don't forget the increasing fuel costs, perhaps saving the money spent for the stacks for fuel in the future would not be a bad idea?
Not sure why I understand the whole stack thing in a pickup bed. First, it leaves one or two hot pipes in contact with or close to the cargo. Second, it takes up valuable cargo space, RIGHT where you need it to keep the load as far forward as possible to keep some weight on the front axle when heavily loaded. Third, in my opinion if yoou want stacks, go buy a real medium or heavy duty truck that they have some advantage for. The third is only my opinion though.
What happens with those, you CANNOT use the block heater on them. The block is very weak where the heater is, and using it, you risk cracking the block.
That's probably what happened to this one.
I'm 17 and I love stacks, whenever there on a Diesel, or 6cyl gas truck. BUT, Stacks belong only on flat beds, tow trucks, dumpers or step sides. Takes out to much hauling space out of a box, sure alot of people has these trucks mostly as toys, and not for work, but still, makes a huge hole in the bed for no real reason.
If you wanna get attention, run big chrome side pipes.

"BUT, Stacks belong only on flat beds, tow trucks, dumpers or step sides."--don't forget big rigs, which, in this person's opinion, are one of the few vehicles that I consider "trucks." What we drive are actually pickups or 4-wheelers (or in some cases, 6-wheelers), even though I catch myself calling my ride a "truck" sometimes.
dude put the stacks on!!..dont listen to the squares lol jk guys.i love bogging and going through water and mud,THIS IS WHAT STACKS ARE FOR.U DONT WANT YOUR EXHAUST IN THE WATER.the backpressure causes stalling and whatnot. go on ebay !. search ;exhaust tubing, you will find 10 foot lengths ,elbows and everything to go with it .if you like the oldschools style rain caps are a must. i spent about 200 buks and i have stainless steel stacks with raincaps on my 81 f250 ,in my opinion it looks sweeeeeeet.if you happen to live in the state of NH you dont need to have your diesel muffled its totally legal.
The only reason I can fathom for having stacks on a pickup truck is if it's a dedicated off-road truck. And if you're going through water deep enough to need stacks, you'd need a snorkel too. But if said truck is going to be a daily driver, or for working, then stacks would just get in the way. Granted, they look good on some trucks, but in my opinion, an '80-'86 F-Series is not one of them.
Just my $0.02. But, it's your truck. Do with it what you will.

I remember @ 17 making a 2-way valve to divert the exhausts with the pull of a lever & bypass the muffler. No point at all - just fun at 17
Ten years later I read in an autobiography of a fellow (actually an American, R.G. LeTourneau) doing the same thing pre-1920 for paying customers. I'd never heard of it before, but nothing's new.
nice truck diesel john,i like the wing on the truck next to it too very different.hay i was doing the same stuff when i was 16,though im only 20 now the style sticks .i have a 85 dodge conversion van 4x4.it has a single stack that runs up the drivers side kinda like a military hummer .plus my own custom snorkel.personaly what got me onto it is my farther being a truck driver and wen u get that unburnt fuel and that big puff of smoke i think its the coolest thing in the world.
There is only ONE valid reason for putting stacks on a pickup truck. If it is a diesel, the stacks will throw the soot up and over the roof of your house as you tow it from one part of Hazard County to another. Keeps your bedroom window a little cleaner.

You heard about what happened in Alabama, right? The governor's mansion burned down. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but everything inside was destroyed. Fire fighters didn't quite get there in time.. It burned all the way to the wheels.
