Break in oil?

So after my hydraulic-bent rod fiasco- new rings, valves, bearings, IP, should be good for another 18 years!!! Any recomendations from those who have rebuilt their engines on what to use for break-in oil?? Should have it back togeather this week-end and ready to pre-oil, just not sure what to use for these diesel engines. I used straight shell SAE30 for my flathead- sounds and runs sweet- now to get the IDI daily driver back on the road. I hate it when life sends along these ****e storms!! haha.

Dino ... PERIOD!!

You want a CI-4 Plus oil, something like Rotella, Dello.

NO Synthetics until after break in.

this test was done by blackstone labs (very reliable) and was discussed through bob is the oil guy as well (also very reliable). as festus suggested i would avoid synthetics during break in and use standard oil (thats what these engines were designed with after all) I personally now use John Deere Plus 50 II which is a CI-4 oil. Rotella actually got surprisingly terrible ratings and isn't for our trucks also, it is a CJ-4 rated oil now designed for use in trucks with the new DPF emissions system

id pick one from the best or good category and just run it consistently(minus the synthetics though)

I use nothing but either John Deere 50 II, But I know a good oil to break an engine in with that always gets high ratings is that Royal Purple stuff. Also, when you start breaking it in. I find that adding some stuff called Duralube really helps.

Royal Purple Break-In is expensive, used it, it's pretty good, over kill for these motors IMO.

DO NOT USE ROYAL PURPLE. the point of a "break in oil" is for gassers with flat lifters. the new oils have either no or very little zinc in them causing new cams to get flat lobes very quickly without the assist of either a zinc additive or a break in oil. with roller lifters like we have, its not needed.

yeah if you are freaked about it, just get a moly or zinc additive from the parts store and relax. This is a no brainer, go with the napa oil as it is the same essentially as the top rated dino oil on that chart. just look at the numbers, were talking tiny differences.

Yep- I used zinc additive for the 1948 flathead rebuild- have been using Rotella 15W40 for the IDI, will look for something rated CI-4 for the beakin on the IDI, thanks.

Rotella got surprising bad reviews on these IDI's, I didnt know about the missing Zinc or Moly, I better find a new oil lol. Although I run John Deere 50 II because I like that most and im a john deere nut lol.

John Deere Oil is where its at man. there in the good category and is oil 16 when he's talkin about it. and they had some good things to say about it too

Oils 15, 16, 18, 19, and 21 all fall into a group of oils with a TBN value
of approximately 10 (as do oils 2 and 10 from the last discussion),
which are probably of API CI-4 performance (not CI-4 Plus). Oils
15, 16, and 18 are my favorites of this group because they contain
the highest levels of calcium detergent. Oils 16 and 18 also contain
supplemental oxidation inhibitors, so I would rank them highest in
this group.

and has a zinc level at 1164. the lowest being 940 and the highest being 1500

i feel pretty good about what were running Aune

As for price vs quality of additive package, number 2 on the list is where i now stay. The napa oil. Ranks better in numbers than the JD but im not arguing. Just throwing out the napa brand to those that cant find a JD or want to use oil with an unbeatable additive package. Cant figure out the calcium statement though. The napa oil is 3562, the JD oil is 2877. Either way, as long as you are using an oil with a solid additive package, youre good to go!

Royal Purple Break-In oil is blended for Flat Tappet Break-in ... That is what it's for!

Personally, I would just run Delo 400 in these trucks, that is what it's made for!

-Enjoy

CI-4 and CJ-4 oils are for HEUI injected engines like Power Strokes.

Extra anti-foaming agents so the oil don't all turn to foam when it goes through the high pressure oil pump and injectors at 3000 PSI.

API SF/CD or SF/CE is the oil spec the IDI has to have.

My break in oil was Mobil Delvac 1300 for 12,000 miles.
