I have a F250HD with 7.5L engine, 4.10 rear and C-6 tranny.
I am going on a 400 mile trip. On the way back, I will be towing a 8500 lbs trailer.
I want to know what RPM range to keep it in when going there empty and when going back with the trailer. I want to get the best fuel economy possible. I have gotten 11.5 MPG at 55mph. I want to get at least 11MPG. I realize that when towing, I will probably get 8-9MPG.
Obviously, the RPM comes from the speed you are driving. If you want the best fuel economy, something around 45 MPH is best. Depending on the terrain, you will want to stay in 3rd gear. Let the transmission do the thinking unless it starts to shift back and forth on long grades, then lock it in second until over the top of the grade. At 65 MPH you would be looking at 3250 RPM or so, thats what eats up the gas. Pulling the weight plus higher RPM = more throttle and lower fuel economy.
