Rack & Pinion strenth??
I need to tackle the steering in my '59, right now the stock box is shot and has about 9" of free play in the steering wheel. I want power steering to while I'm at it.
I really like the No Limit bolt it R&P kit, price isn't took bad($630 shipped) and I'd love more than anything to be able to run down the highway and have the truck steer like a new vehicle. Only thing I'm concered with is I always thought R&P was only for small cars and anything with any kind of weight should have a normal steering box.
My '59 F250 is setup like a truck with '59 F350 running gear, I plan to use it like a truck but obviously wont but frame deep in mud sawing the steering wheel back and forth.
How strong is the No Limit kit/R&P in general? Can I use it on my truck?

Howdy,
You, like me have a "REAL" truck!
The "No limit" steering appears to be a "car" steering system.
If you don't want to get a newer F-250/350 steering system, you might look into replacing your steering box with a rebuilt one and going with a power "assist" system like late 70's F-250's used.

That's what I'm considering for my 55 F-600.
Cheers,
Rick

I actually have been thinking of taking a power steering box off a newer 250 or 350 and swapping it into my truck.

yeah that's kinda what I was thinking, just wanted to get some other opinions because it would be a cool setup. This is the kit I was looking at POWER STEERING STRAIGHT AXLE-No Limit Engineering

I don't know if I would put it on a 3/4 or 1Ton truck though....You could ask them I guess. They'll probably tell you that you can use it, but at your own peril.
They probably won't guarantee it on anything but a 1/2T pickup because of liability reasons.
Someone puts it on a 3/4 or 1ton truck and goes blasting down the road with a 40ft horse trailer on the back.....loses control and the smart lawyer blames it on the steering system, Ford, the driver, tire manufacturer, the air-conditioning supplier, and the drivers plumber just for good measure!!!
The Jury finds for the victim and exonerates the plumber but everybody else has to pay!! (except the insurance company because the owner put a steering system on the truck that was only "designed" for a 1/2T truck.
In a world where someone can sue a company because they spill hot coffee on themselves, you can see where it's not much of a "stretch" to sue for wrongful death when someone uses "wrong" parts on a truck........
I'm just saying............................maybe I'm just paranoid!!

I have rack and pinion steering in my 4100 pound Mercury Marauder, so I know they can be tough enough to use in heavier vehicles. That part isn't a problem. But I have an issue with their use with a straight axle suspension design. The rack is designed to be mounted solid to the frame and the tie rods move in conjunction with the control arms in an independant front suspension design. That is totally opposite from how a straight axle works, and to mount a rack to the axle and have the coupling between the steering wheel and the steering unit movable is just flat wrong, imho. People may build it and use it, but that doesn't make it right, or safe. You have parts moving that aren't supposed to. My 2c.
I agree with Rick in that if there was ever a problem, the neglegence lawsuit would not be pretty.
