6.0L Sucks on Fuel Milage
#61
If had nickel for every time I heard this 'say they get 14 to 15 mpg city'; people tend to exaggerate their mileage or simply don't know how to properly it calculate it.
I think you need to have a hard look at the definition of 'city' because it means 100 different things depending on your style.
After mechanicals are cleared the only thing left is you & your 'city' route.
I have played with mpg on 15 vehicles over 30 years.
It is the elusive holy grail!
Computer driven vehicles on test tracks are the only way to compare 2 vehicles period.
This truck will never break much over 10mpg in the worst of 'city' driving; fortunately for 99% of us we do 'mixed' driving.
Have a look how the Europeans talk about their mileage they use 3 descriptions: urban; extra-urnaban; and freeway
They are also the masters of high mpgs; you won't see any 7,500 lbs trucks over there. But you see small trucks with awesome 4cyl diesels that get 35+ mpg & can do 90% of what our trucks do; fuel costs are 3-4 times what ours are.
Good luck but don't go crazy thinking you should get 15 in your 'city' drives-soemone is pulling your leg. Challenge them to follow you around for a week in their truck

I wander how much the tires can make a difference. I have an 03 Extended Cab, Lariat, 3.73, 100k miles and I average 16.2 with a mix of city and highway. I also average 11.1mpg pulling my camper. I drove my dad's truck which is an 06 Crew Cab, Lariat, 3.73, with 20 in rims and I was getting 13.1 with a mix of city and highway. It was the same route back and forth to work. I was driving his while I had the oil cooler and EGR delete done on mine. I have gotten 22.1, but that was absolutely babying the truck up and down the hills as Cheezit said. I was trying to keep the boost below 5psi and the speeds on the highway below 70. I towed my camper with my dads truck last fall while I was waiting to get mine fixed, and I couldn't manage over 10mpg with his truck. The truck never lacked for power, but the fan does kick on more than mine.
Long story short......I lost a lot of MPG's when my oil cooler was getting clogged because my ECT was not getting up to temp. I was averaging 14.9mpg on the same route back and forth to work. I just had oil cooler and egr delete done and I am back to the 16mpg I was getting before.

I have had two F-350 6.0l lb,cc,4x4.3.73 axles one was an 03 XLT that someone needed more than me I guess and its replacement is an 06 Lariat FX4. The 03 was getting 16-18 mpg mixed (and 19-21hwy) and the 06 is getting 11-13(11-13 hwy) mixed. The only other difference between the two was the 03 had a Banks Power Pak (I know everyone hates Banks) It was also studded. But as some say chips, programmers whatever you use will not increase mileage so I would like to know why the difference. Same driver different trucks hand calculated. But I do realize if you are worried about mpg you should not buy a one ton truck. I bought the truck to tow a fifth wheel and it doe it very well I might add. But just the same why are the mpg’s all over the place. Sorry for being long winded also. Also both trucks had stock size tires.

I have an 03 6.0 Lariat. Getting 12-13 in the city absolutely babying it. Can get up to 14-16 on the highway and am kinda disappointed with the mileage. Need to get it checked out as the hubs are acting funky switching in and out of 4x4 when in 4x4 mode. Also going to get the new reflashes. Well see what happens

There were tons & tons (injectors; programming; turbo size; pistons; egr system) It's really pretty scary if you own an 03. The changes went on and on until the 05 model year; then were more subtle through 06 & then very few after that.
Saying all that I don't know why your 2 trucks were miles apart in mileage. 2-3 I can understand but your spread is 6-8 that's leads me tobelieve that your 06 had some issues & that your 03 was a late 03 after many updates were through. The Banks unit could have helped but again 1 or 2 mpg max.
Let's not forget something as innocent as tire tread pattern can rob a mpg or 2.
If you figure out the 'secret' please pass it along.
I'm getting 15.5 in mixed driving & on the open road I might get 16.5!
When I bough the truck I though I could pull off 18-20 hwy because my father-in-laws Dodge gets 22! Worse yet we did a 1500 mile 5th wheel trip and his Dodge did 5mpg better pulling a much bigger rig!!!
To bad Dodges sucks in so many other ways.....

After I cleaned and got everything back in I couldn't believe the drag when spinning the wheel by hand!
This was before I snugged up the pads and then it was twice as bad.
This is one heavy unit.
Just for kicks pull over on a flat deserted road, bring a friend or 6.
Try pushing this beast.
We really gotta figure out how to make these lighter.
7,500lbs is really excessive. I know they're supposed to be heavy because they are so strong......I wish I could by a 6,000lbs 4x4 crew that will pull my 9,500 5th wheel. It should exist in 2011.

Mine were sticking to the point were you could smell them, thats hot! I do a feel check every once in a while, after driving, reach down and touch your rims, they will be warm from brake use, but mine you could fry an egg on instantly!! They didn't all go at same time either, one by one, gotta keep an eye out

I called today and made an appointment with the Ford dealership for Friday morning. They're going to take it in and put it on the "machine" to check all the dianostics of the truck, and check for any upgrades for the computers. They're also going to replace the fuel filters while its in there. The upgrades helped my friends truck last year after he had them done, so that's what I'm going to try. I will let everyone know if it helps/hurts the truck.

Because the OP is spending money on the diagnosis and new fuel filters, he will be psychologically predisposed to achieve higher mileage and will leave the dealership with a lighter foot.
He will claim he was right!
If he washes his truck, mileage will improve an additional 6%.

It does.......
When I first got my truck I redid the front brakes.

When my 2005 Fx4 was new a solenoid in auto trans went bad ( hammer shifting, slipping) Wife drove it to dealer and they changed it & added accesory trans filter. I called and told them 13 mpg was BS reflash or something. When i got truck back 17mpg avg 15 into headwind 19 / 20 with tail wind.
