How ho you drive your PSD for optimal fuel mileage?
Do you:
1) Punch it, get it up to speed then cruise along?
2) Run up to 2 grand then stay under till you get to speed?
3) Run lightly up to speed, around 2 grand, then idle under 2 grand if possible?
I'm asking because I recently have installed 285/75/R16s on my truck from 265/75/R16s and my speedo is perfect, excactly on GPS, and another two vehicles factory and unmodified. But I am only getting 125 mpg on my 99 250, PSD 7.3L, 4x4, Short Bed, Ext Cab, 3.73s.
I shift my 6 speed at 1500, get into 6th by 40 mph and cruise.. If I stay below 75mph it gets the best mpg. Funny thing when gas prices hit near $2 a gallon, my fuel economy seemed to drop by half
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?

125 mpg? Wow -- that's the best I've ever heard! 12.5, on the other hand, is pretty bad -- even my 5.4 V-8 can do better.
The post about staying below 75 mph is quite accurate. I would say 65-70 is the ideal speed for fuel efficiency in the F-250. I have read where anything over 55 is bad, but this seems like BS according to my overhead console. Now, if only I can follow my advise and stop setting the cruise control at 85, maybe I won't complain as much about bad mileage. Oh well...
Stupid question/comment for ya' -- option #1 I know can't be right. But how are options #2 & #3 different? Seem the same to me. Also, what mpg were you getting before the tire swap?
I don't believe that any vehicle is going to get it's best milage by seeing how fast you can get up to a high speed. I'm not a scientist but something to do with inertia and wind resistance. My 2001 F-350 4x4 dually w/4.10s and 2.35-R16s does it's very best between 55 and 60, towing 10,000 lbs or empty. I have been able to coax 16MPG out it empty a few times but it normaly runs 15 or just shy of that. On a trip out west last summer I ran a tank through at 75+ and the MPG dropped to 11 empty, the same milage I get at 60 when towing a big load.
12.5 Mpg is the avg right now, this includes little idle time,
I let it warmup in the morning and drive her, stop and turn her off if I am going to be more than 5mins (except gassing up)
and option #2 never gets above 2,000rpm and option #3 you just stay around it.
15 is about what I think I should get, I got 14 with the old tires, then it got less with all that I fixxed, had a brake seeze up and when I fixxed it I got 13.6 then it went to 13 then oilchange and new fuel filter and it went to 12.9 then it is at 12.5 with new tires.
Seems like the higher prices on diesel the lower the MPG!
Should I get her serviced I have 93k on her and dont want to go out of warranty on the engine!
I would definitely take it in and have it checked out, might have an injector going bad. Have you had the new style air box installed? The customers I've had that had the replacement airbox installed have had some increase in mileage and power.
My 2002 averages 15.8 MPG in normal driving ( for me that's pretty hard ), if I drive it nice ( like a normal citizen) I get 16.4 MPG. I added a Bully Dog flip chip, and a AFE intake a few months ago, with those mods, driving nice on the 70hp setting I have been able to squeeze out 18.9 MPG. Driving my normal ways, it stays between 15.5 and 16.5 MPG, including quite abit of 4wd use lately.
Definitely check your air filter, don't count on the telltale.
FordFleetSales: Is your rig a 250 with what gears and what bed and what tranny and what cab, that helps me compare, I have seen where some 250 mauals with a short bed and reg 2door cab get that mileage, my dealer keeps telling me that is normal and dosent think I should get it serviced. I thought that this would be better mileage than my gasser, but sofar nothing close and it keeps getting wose.
I am goging to do the chip too, Diesel Injection Services have a chip that modifies the trans too, they claim that is the only chip that modifies it, has anybody found this to be true, and as for prices what is the BEST chip with the most gain? (Fuel Mileage, Power, And Towing, And Wont Screw Anything Up!)
My F250 is a crewcab longbed 4x4 with 3.73 gears. I have the 4R100 trans. The trans was rebuilt at 14,000 mles. the truck had no mods at that point. Mileage ran 14-15 MPG for 1st 3-4,000 miles then kept getting better, until last tank before tranny rebuild. After trans rebuild mileage has stayed high 15's to low 16's MPG with hard driving. This all at altitude also. Noticed slightly better fuel economy during a trip to Dallas. Truck currently has 33,000 miles. I sell a lot of PSD's and keep in contact with most of my customers, 15-16 MPG is usually the lowest mileage reported back to me. 17-18 seems to be the avg. with some getting low 20's with a mild chip and exhaust.
I'd try another dealer.

That's odd of them to say that... we program chips every day that accomplished this. What's the ECU code of the truck?
