I have a 79 F-250 2wd, I was having problems starting my truck every once in a while it would "grind" and then I would hit the key again it would start. So I though I would try and replace the starter and the problem seemed to go away. But A few days later it started again, so just recently i replaced the flex plate which was a fun job . Right after I finished I went to start my truck and nothing, the starter was turning but that was it, then it did grab the flex plate and it started up. Now it will start 9 times out of 10 but it will still completly miss the flex plate and not start or grind a bit then start. And it seems to be better if I turn the key quickly.
Any Ideas? I heard that sometimes you need to put spacers in?,
could it be a bad starter?
I just replaced it with a stock replacement flex plate and starter.
I dont know if this will help any, but have you tried replacing the starting solenoid???? It might be possible that it is not allowing the starter to engage quickly enough?? I dont know if it is the cause of your problem, but it might help?!?!?! Besides, it will go out anyways, (my luck anyways) and replacing it is cheap insurance.
These starters usually don't require shims. Since you replaced the flex plate, I would say that you got a bad starter. It's happened to me a couple times, the rebuilt starter has a faulty drive on it. Take it back and get a new one.
Make sure that that tin plate between the motor and transmission is in good condition, I have seen a lot of them that the starter was tightened up but it was not aligned with the round hole in the tin plate, The Tin plate is responsible for locating the starter properly to the ring gear/flywheel. If it is damaged or distorted it may need to be replaced.
I dont think its the flex plate because I just changed it last weekend. but I think I will try and replace the solenoid and see what that does, then look at the starter. The metal plate should be ok because we lined up the pins though it, but I could check that out. I dont want to let this go too long because I would hate to have to replace the flex plate again!
Thanks for the replies ,
Joey
P.S. I was thinking of replacing the wire that goes to the starter as well, with a nice heavy guage one, after all it is 23 years old to!.
