My 73 Highboy wont start, I tried to start it today and the battery was dead. So I put it on a 2 amp charge for about 2 and a half hours and when i turn the key it wont do any think. Like the headlights wont come on dome light radio not even the horn. but i put the charger on jump turn the key on not starting it just the key on and the starter makes a grinding noise, then if i try to start it the seloniod just clicks. o and the battery is a fairly new interstate. What would you do?
If it's completely dead then it's going to take a lot more than 2 hours at 2 amps to get a decent charge into it. I would disconnect the negative cable and put it on 2 amps for at least 24 hours, maybe even 36 to 48. If you have a 10 amp setting then leave it on that for a good 8 hours.
Then try to figure out what killed your battery in the first place.
Clean you battery posts then charge your battery overnight. Be sure to vent your battery if its not a sealed battery. If that doesn't work replace your battery or do the following.
Check your radio wiring to be sure the red A+ wire is going to the ACCY position on your fuse block or you spliced into the factory harness where the original radio connects too. Then check to see if the yellow wire from your radio is connected to unswitched A+. This is your memory wire for the radio and needs battery at all times or you will lose your presets.
Connect everything up except the POS battery post and if you have a volt/ohm meter check your current draw by placing your meter in the AMP position and place your test leads between the POS battery post and the battery cable. with nothing on in your truck (Be sure to close your door.) you should only draw .10AMPS or so. (From your stereo memory) If you have more current draw then you'll have to do some isolating to locate the source.
Also check your grounds from the battery to the block and chassis make sure they are clean. Bad grounds will cause all kinds of weird problems.
I ran my yellow wire straight off the positive side of the battery. And i ran the red wire to the fuse box i dont know which one but the radio shuts off when i turn the key off.
