Edge Insight Accuracy

I recently installed my CTS and have had the truck out a few times checking the temps, getting some strange results.

ECT 182/184 and EOT 173/174 after about an hour drive to work, 10 min warm up and 50 min on the highway. A few times the EOT jumped to 183/184 momentarily but quickly returned.

The first times the ambient temperature was below zero so I dismissed the results.

After driving it again with the temp in the mid 40's with the same results I suspect a problem. I realize a new thermostat is in the works but I'm wondering if there is an issue with my insight or perhaps an EOT sensor?

Any Ideas?

Thanks, Rich

Your oil temp readings are definitely not correct, once the engine is at operating temp the oil temp will always be slightly higher then coolant temp. Call Edge and get their opinion. I have the Insight and so far my monitored readings seem to be very close to other users readings.

I would agree with juice ss, maybe edge will swap you out with a new unit..The only thing else is change the oil sensor, since it is the one out of spec..

What are your readings before you atart the truck in the morning? Are they close to even?

Excellent question, I hadn't even thought of that, prestart both EOT and ECT are both ambient temperature and as I warm the ECT comes up quicker than EOT.

My eot follows about 10 degrees behind my ect until warmup, then passes it and stays 4-8 degrees over. New oil and egr coolers. And very cold temps where I live.

I think you will have to look outside of the Insight for your answer. The Insight just takes digital data from the PCM and displays it. Assuming you have chosen the correct PID, which should be diesel oil temp, it cannot show incorrect data.

First thing to do is get that thermostat replaced. Then see where you are. Yours is basically stuck full open.

Mine runs the same way with or without my cold front on. Just wish my coolant temp would run a little higher. Put a new Ford thermostat in and it will hit 192 then go back to 188. I also have a new oil cooler and egr delete.

Mine runs exactly the same way unloaded. Drove 200 miles (100 miles each way) down the highway last weekend and she stayed pretty constant at 188ECT and 194EOT. Was ~50* on the drive there Friday, and ~65* on the drive home Sunday. Should a properly running truck hit 192 and stay there (assuming your running unloaded on level ground)?

This is my first foray into the diesel world but from my experience with gasers and real time data logging you could watch the temp build till the thermostat opened then it would cool off and build back up again. So due to that I find it odd I am not seeing the same thing with my Edge.

New thermostat is waiting to be picked up at the dealership.

I also just got off the phone with Edge tech support, the individual I spoke with believed that its perfectly normal for EOT to be less than ECT, he said he sees it all the time. I don't think he got it when I tried to explain that the coolant is the cooling medium for the oil.

So unless the thermostat fixes my low EOT reading my next step is to go after the oil sensor. Any body have a part number or experience with changing that?

Thanks, Rich

I've very happy with it. I have the older one. I don't plan to upgrade to color. This one gives me what I need.

I just put in a brand new ford thermostat and my truck runs 190. I can be on the highway all day and it stays at 190, unless i really get on it then it goes up but comes back to 190. I do not think 188 is bad, if it was only at 180 i would think about a new one.

P.S. I love my edge insight!!!
