As much as I like the IDI's, that is going to be a dog in that truck. Even the 466's in a truck that size aren't any prize for speed. Add to it only a 4speed with a 2 speed rear, and that tells me it has no OD, so fuel consumption on that is going to be poor.

Over on oilburners, some retired RV salesmen remembers these, they were VERY expensive machines, 65,000$ ish back then. Older loaded guys had them, and hauled huge 5er's with 'em.
Read that again. It's a 4speed, with a 2 speed rear end, producing 8 speeds. Likely a T19 that was used in the rest of the Ford pickups. It would have decent pulling power, in low/low it would likely move a house, but I bet the gearing is such that it would likely top out at about 55mph.
Gotta remember, they were being built right after the big fuel crisis still, so speed wasn't as big a factor as it is now.
I've got a truck tucked away for someday in the future, it's a '52 2 ton, had the 239 flathead eight originally, with a two speed rear end. I'd have to hunt up my shop manual for it, but iirc the lowest ratio worked out to about 13:1 gearing.
Generally with a 2speed rear, if running empty, I was always taught to start in 1st low, or depending on the truck, 1st high, then go through high until in top gear. If loaded, then you would use them all.
yea i was gonna say weren't the IDI's used in grain trucks and the like back in the day as well with gear splitters? i think my brothers boss has one a them old grain trucks actually...... wonder if the T19 hooked up to one a those semi lookers you could cram a ZF5 in there......??????
