Smile New 6.4 Owner

Just wanted to throw it out there.. I took the plunge into a 08 6.4L Crew Cab Short Bed King Ranch with navigation and 50K miles. I owned an 03 6.0L King Ranch that was lifted 8" w/ 38" tires.. had it for 5 1/2 years.. racked up 130K trouble free miles on it... i'm a little older now and wanted something a little more practical.. i've been reading this forum day in and day out since June of 05 when i joined, tons of great info here... My 6.0 was one of the early 6.0's.. and it ran like a dream... let me say this.. i coudln't be happier with this new truck.. it runs great, drives smooth, quiet.. and the interior is incredible.. i cant say enough about these new trucks.. Props to Preston Ford in Hurlock, MD for making the deal and giving me a killer deal on my truck trade in.. they offered me an amount i couldn't refuse.. as soon as i get some pics.. i'll upload them into my profile, but its in my avatar for now.. debating on waiting for the 100K mark before i put an exhaust, tuner, dpf delete, intake, all that.. that was the first thing i did to my 6.0 when i got it.. straight pipe, gauges, tuner, intake..

congrats, take some time to read the manual, esp the diesel supplements.

Read the diesel maint care and tips as well.

You will want to follow the severe maintance schedule. Check fluids weekly on this motor and use only OEM fuel and oil filters.

This is an excellent towing motor and loves to work hard and long.

Congratulations
Its a great truck. But like a beautiful woman, if you don't take care of her, she will make you pay.
Do I sound bitter? :-)

Congrats! I've owned a 6.4L for about 5 months now but have driven one on duty(F450) since early '08. It's amazing at how these trucks perform and what kind of 'abuse'(for the lack of a better word) they can handle. No, they aren't perfect, but which engine is? The main reason for me buying a 6.4L was due to me driving one every day at work. You can learn a lot here and the people here are very knowledgeable and friendly. Good luck.

i just hope this one is a good one.. it seems good.. oasis was good.. there was one hiccup when i bought it.. i took it for a test drive for about 30 mins.. took it thru the ropes.. hard acceleration.. hard braking.. etc.. ran perfect.. not one mishap.. go back to the dealer.. do up the paper work.. work out a good trade on my 03 i couldn't refuse.. made the deal.. salesman takes it into town to fill it up for me.. comes back and says check engine light came on when he was in town.. so they kept it.. but we had already made the deal.. so they let me take home another 08 CC SB lariat they had on the lot home in place of the King ranch while they fixed it.. they called me today and said they replaced the egr.. hopefully this wont be a recurring prob from now on.. they said it had been on the lot for almost 6 months.. maybe it had a little case of "Lot Rot".. they called me today.. they'll be at my house tomorrow @ 11am with my new to me King Ranch and they'll take back the "loaner" they let me use.. i used to do all my own maintenance on my 6.0.. (oil, fuel filter, trans fluid, diffs, ball joints, bearings, etc).. so hopefully my learning curve on this new one will be quick.. i'll def be on here a lot reading and learning.. hopefully i'll learn this 6.4 like i learned the 6.0.. also.. this truck is 100% stock.. still has the brand new paint in the trailer hitch thinking about DPF delete and a tuner already.. prob gonna wait 50k til my warranty is up tho

extending idleing or alot of city driving and then the sitting on the lot probably stuck that valve.

The EGR valve on this motor is much better than the 6.0. You should have no problems with it. They also did a re-design of it as well.

Just don't do extended idleing with this motor unless you high idle it.

senix... my tuner with my 6.0 i was able to turn off the EGR all together.. it would just stay closed... so i didn't have any issues with it.. is this something that is possible with tunes for the 6.4?? I had a SCT from Innovative Diesel in Elkton, MD.. EGR was turned off.. and the truck ran great..

i wouldn't in the 6.4. That is one way the turbo uses to vent excess pressure. there are a few I think that are doing it though.

Congrats also..I just bought a used 08 F450 with 33,000 miles but did the DPF and Cat removal and the SCTLivewire. Happy with my choice. Called the dealer first before removing the stuff and they said ONLY IF those removed items would or could be shown as reason for a failure did it make a NO. So I did it.

Have only had SCTL on for about a week so to sure on all the programing modes yet.

Congrats onthe "New" rig.

As to debating on mods.... couple of things to keep in mind, regens are a way of life inthe stock form. the way this works is fuel in introduced into the exhaust stroke some washes past the rings into the oil...... plus your mileage will drop during this event. I lost the Filter and Cat one night when I left the truck outside..... Hummm new exhaust and tuner $1400.... fuel mileage increased and diesel smell in the cab was gone.
Updates the Intake to a Volant Donaldson system and things are even better.

Next is to retune the trans to get better efficency out of it. Stay tuned to this one looking at a selectable Manual / Automatic function if all goes right. This should further increase mileage

After that an AIRDOG is in the works....

Then the fun will begin.

My decission was based on longevity and a bit of a gamble on quallity control. I can do most of the work myself and the dealer I work with will work with me.... something quite odd in this day and age. 59K so far and things are looking good. Had a radiator issue but that is fixed now. Getting a weird injector fault that recycling the key solves I figure it is an electrical connector issue. The ERG/Coolant possibilty scares me a little but it I leave the hood open long enough the EGR might set it self free and jion theCat and DPF.

Cheers

spartans can turn it off, 175hp and down tunes cycle it as stock, 210,250hp tunes cycle it only at idle, and 275 and up don't cycle it at all(perfect for if you're going to remove it.)

Did they replace the fluid and how many miles did that happen at? I have a leak and Monday it goes to the dealer. Should I have the 203 degree thermostat put in then?

51,575 miles
Interesting turn of events... the leak started during a real cold snap and only after a short run 25-23 minutes. After that the leak disappeared....
Came back again and really could not figure out where it was coming from other than the left side. Added 1 can of stop leak and it has not resurfaced. .... One of the things to be replaced/upgraded is the radiator to an all aluminum unit from Davis. Intercooler will be done at the same time..

Cheers
