1985 F-150 rear axle ratio?

There's a truck being junked about 70 miles from me. I cant go have a look. It's a 1985 with a 300 six, and AOD transmission. The AOD is burned up, and the owner is not interested in repairing it. The 300 six has been spoken for, as have most of the interior parts.

Anybody have an idea what a common set-up would be on a 300 with AOD... Any clue on the ratio on the rear end? We know it is an 8.8" The tag on the truck door is long ago faded away. This truck was not special ordered.

My current '83 truck has a high-ratio rear end. It's turning 3200 RPM at 70 MPH. High gas prices will kill me driving this old girl.

Its already arranged to swap rear ends on these trucks. I just need to have an idea of what the '85 might have used.

The current owner of the '85 told me that it was not hard on gas.

Oh yeah, I get all the window gaskets and door parts!!!

The 300/AOD combo was frequently coupled to a 3.08 rear, however they could be had with 2.47, 2.73, 3.08 or 3.55 ratios. Best way to check, is have a look at the tag on the rearend. The ratio will be stamped into it, on the lower line of numbers/letters. The bolt that holds the tag to the rearend tends to obscure the first number, so don't be surprised if it just appears to show "08 8 8" or something like that. The 2 "8"s should be there, as it's an 8.8, and that refers to ring gear size.

Thanks. I sure hope its a 3.08. That would be a bit better mileage, as this truck is not ever used to pull anything anymore.
