I have a 1979 f-250 with the 300 6 cyl. It has been sitting for about 5 years, and it has pretty bad oil in it. It starts up and runs smooth for about a minute then you start to here engine noises. Not knocks, just taps and such, then it shuts down. I took the plugs out and was able to turn it over easily. Whats my next move, oil pump or do you think the engines trashed?
I would have started out different with some precautions, but it sounds more like a fuel issue. I'm sure the carb is gummed up, fuel filter needs changed.
I concur, sounds like a fuel starvation issue. When it dies, see if there is still fuel supply at the carb. If not, try removing the fuel supply line at the fuel pump, and run a rubber line into a gas can, see if that will keep it running longer. If it does, you have a problem somewhere in the fuel line or tank.
Of course, all this is assuming you have already replaced the fuel filter at the carb. Those are well known for getting plugged very quickly, as it doesn't take much crud to plug them up......
Also, check for spark when it dies. Could be a failing ignition box, coil, or dist.
