Super Duty + Salt....

Where it is cold,,,you must mix salt with sand to keep it from freezing into lumps, that will bridge across a sander opening,,preventing any sand from being spread by the sander !!
Here in the NorthEast (CT),,,they(The State Highway dept), have switched to a liquid mixture,,,,,Calcium Chloride,,,, I think,,,,,,this stuff is even worse then the salt,,as far as Rotting out trucks etc,,,,I heard it even eats Stainless Steel,,,,,,,,plus they try to Pre-Treat roads,,,while it works on small storms,,,(couple inches),,,Big storms does Diddly-Squat,,,,Plus there is No sand at all for any Traction !!
Give me Sand & Salt,,Instead !!
This past summer I had to get under my 06' SuperDuty,,,go at the cab seams with a Needle Scaler,,to clean them off,,,,Re-coated with Primer and Amsoil metal Protectant,,,,Was Just under the Cab 4 days ago to Drain the Water-Seperator(first time in 4 yrs the ,,,"Water in Fuel" light came on),,,cab looks Good from my previous work !!

To the original poster....if you'd like, I'll go take a pic of my truck. It looks twice as bad as yours !!!
Here's something for you guys to think about.....I just read an article in our local paper (I live in Western NY near Niagara Falls), and they said they are now using...are you ready...drum roll please....a new mix of MOLASSES and salt !!!!!!!!!!!!! Its some form of molasses, and its supposed to help the salt stick better to the roads. That my friends, means its gonna (the salt mixture) stick to everything alot better.

This winter has been really hard on my truck trying to keep it clean. It snows a little every other day.Plus its been pretty cold.I'm not complaining about the cold and snow, because I like plowing snow, snowmobiling, ice fishing,etc...My truck is starting to get the dreaded rust bubbles on the rear fenders. Its going to be about 40 degrees F today so I'm draging out the hose and give my truck and snowplow a good cleaning.I might even wash the wifes car[maybe I'll get a reward for my hard work].

Finally picked up a winter car this year. I only use the truck if the snow is real bad in the winter here in WNY. I then wash it asap. I'll let the car take the salt abuse and save the truck for the summer. Looks good parked in the driveway all shiny still!! I'm sick of the salt wasting away my trucks.

wish i took a picture of my truck i just washed it and it looked as bad as yours here in northwest montana they use Calcium Chloride or Mag cloride some call it but that is what u see on the orginal posters truck not salt. they spray this in liquid form on the dry roads before it snow and it will melt the snow off. once it dries it looks like that a white powder.

I am in Detroit area, and there is salt everywhere. My city started the salt brine but ran out the third time it snowed, seemed to help some. Expecting my truck within 2 weeks, only problem is it won't fit in my garage, to long and tall. So it will be a lot of quarters at the $1.50 car wash next year.

I hear some people will spray oil underneath a new truck all over every inch then let it drip for a day or two. Keeps them from rotting.
Ive had salted and sanded roads, I would prefer sand, less damage in the long run. A few windshields and rock chips are much easier to deal with than rust holes.
