Build Ideas

I'm looking for some help and suggestions on some build ideas for my race truck this season. It's a 1992 5.0 with factory E.F.I
I'm on a scrap yard budget so the kind of racing i do with this truck i don't want the big money parts due to the fact they are in mud and water alot.
What I've done thus far is a "snorkel" type with K&N filter in the cab, deleted the fan (running electrics manually), no smog pump or a/c and used a smaller belt route. also removed the exhaust system but left the 02 sensor for the speed density fuel system. soon purchasing an edelbrock performer cam kit.
hopefully getting some gt40 heads and headers but here is where i sorta get lost.
want to use a later model explorer or mustang intake but too much work to go MAF, do i have too? can i use injectors from an 03 mustang GT? if i get an older ford H.O cam do i have to also change my timing?
basically I'm looking for some tweeks that i can get better performance from a close to stock motor.
thanks for any suggestions

If you do the cam & heads so that it will run higher RPMs , underdrive pullys will give some more HP in the higher rpm range , a noticeable difference , the stock 19# injectors are good to about 300 hp so you should be good with them ..also if you havn't allready advanced the timing , bump it up from 10 to 12-14 deg btdc....Lew

thats good to know about the injectors, and yes forgot i did do the timing advance. i know the gt40p heads are more readily available but i have heard the require a different exhaust manifold, but maybe in my case it would not matter and just use the ones on it since it will not be on road. what are your thoughts on an ignition system such as and msd type? waste of my time on a stock motor?

Yeah the GT 40ps have a different plug angle , but you can check on craigs list , you can find the reg gt 40s , sometimes with some work done to them for not to much . i like the msd ignition , you won't need the box on a stock motor but there coil , cap & rotor and plug wires are very good and will help performance with the hotter spark..Lew

ok thanks for the input. will save some cash and just go with the coil and cap, free up some money for other things.
