I'm pretty new to this and have a question for you Ford guys. I just recently purchased a 1976 ford f-100 4x4 with a 390. I love it and want to restore it. I was told that you can purchase manual locking hubs and replace the existing hubs which make it full time 4x4. I guess my question would be...is this true and if so, how easy or difficult is it? Thanks for the help.
Odds are it is a 360, measure the stroke and double check...
there were several full time 4WD F-250's... but they all came with the NP 203.
I have never herd of a full time F-100 or F-150
WhaT transfer case do you have? dana 21???
Lawdogg, you are correct. If it has full time 4 wheel drive you can buy a kit to convert it to part time 4x4. The kit consists of a set of manual hubs and some parts for the transfer case. The first thing you need to do is identify the transfer case which could be a NP203. Then contact an off road vendor or one of the sponsers on here and purchase the kit and intall it.
Great....I will work on identifying my transfer case. Also, the f-100 series did come with the option to be full time 4x4 as well as the option for a 6.4 liter 390. This one has both. I bought it from a guy in Idaho who was the original owner. Anyone know the easiest way to identify the transfer case?
Climb underneath and look at the back of the case. With anyluck there will be a tag. Should be a little round one usually near the top if I remember correctly. That will identify the case but I am pretty sure it would be a New Process 203 full time case. The other option you have is to find a NP 205 gear drive case. This is the part time case that was also used in these trucks. I think.....the 203 is aluminum and I know the 205 is for sure cast iron.
