C4 vs. ATI

I am looking for some input to make my 67 ride and shift a little smoother. When I bought the truck it had a 289 with a ATI racing transmission. The owner told me himself he would have replaced it with a C4 if he kept it. Right now I am having the 289 remaned at Custom Engine Services in Arcata California, so if I'm going to do it, nows the time. I posted on craigslist looking for a C4 and found one within a few hours for $50obo, which needs a rebuild. So now I am trying to figure out what to do: have the ATI rebuilt or buy the C4 and have it rebuilt. I plan on driving the truck daily and wouldnt be racing at all.
What do you guys think?
Also, what is the fair price for a shop rebuild?

have the C4 rebuilt , or depends on the one from ATI you could have that one reprogrammed and a different torque converter put in ! you can pay from 300.00-1,500.00
bucks all depends what is done ! not all rebuilds are the same !

Usually... A racing trans has a few upgrades you would do to your regular trans at rebuild (harder drums and extra clutch packs), plus a hotter torque converter and a shift kit in the valve body. If there were no drivability issues (slips and sluggish shifting) I would take the ATI and look for a better street driving converter to match your motor. A good trans shop should also be able to tone down any shift kit in the valve body as well. No matter what, you already have a C4 case with the ATI, no need for another slab of aluminum in the garage...

Welcome aboard. --Mike
