Newbie
I just purchased a new to me 1989 F250 4x4 manual 5 speed with the 7.3 IDI, it is a one owner farm truck with 160,000 miles .
I purchased it for $1,000.00 but it needs glow plugs.
I hope it doesn't have autolite or any other crap brand gp's in it.
The prev. owner said that they have replaced the gp's 2 times in the last 10 years and have just been plugging ii up to keep the block warm to crank it for about 3 to 4 years now, they only used it 1 or 2 times a week to haul cows from their pastures to their processing plant.
Any thoughts on why they would have replaced them 2 times in that short of a period, especially considering the mileage.
I am going back to pick the truck up this Saturday.
Thanks for any help in advance, Old FE Fan, Curt Childress J.r.
link to the glow plugs for the 7.3L is in my signature its the first link down there only use motorcraft plugs any other type can lead to swelling or premature failure.
antifreeze needs to have SCA additive which you probably already know but in case you don't the 7.3 is prone to cavitation if the SCA level in the coolant is not maintained. link to good coolant is link number 2 in my signature. if john deere is not readily available CAT and International should have fleet charge which is essentially the same thing. the john deere is about 15 dollars for a gallon of concentrate
and if your still using the stock fuel filter setup and want to change it out to a one piece design the third link in my signature will give you the correct filter. mine leaked from the metal cap on the bottom of the stock filter setup so rather than paying ford to repair crappy design i went one piece with no problems. has plug for water in fuel light to be connected just like the OEM setup.
The CoolGaurd link is broke.
In case you want to clean up the links like so

The radiator has oil in it, looks like it has been in there a while.
The truck smokes a little while idling but it is not antifreeze just smells like diesel smoke.
Drove it about 4 miles and it ran fine plenty of power not missing, or running rough.
It fires right back up every time, not running hot or any other issues, it has several fuel leaks at the lines.
But it continues to smoke while running , not bad but it still smokes .
Do you think the problem with it smoking could be the ip or fuel injectors.
I feel like the oily radiator is probably a oil cooler leak.
Any help is appreciated.
I know it is only $1,000 but I have not made my mind up yet as to get it or not.
oil in water common place to start is the oil cooler. around 70 bucks in parts from international.

other option would be something with the injection pump/injectors. or possibly restricted air flow maybe.... did you take a look at the air filter?
if you get it, it may be wise to invest in a new fuel system for it. uhaultruckparts.com is selling off there stock of injection pumps for 220$ (normally a 350-500$ part) and injectors for 8.40 (normally a 15-30$ part) just to have on hand as a just in case kinda thing.... i did it my truck runs great but those are wear items that will eventually have to be replaced and can't beat that price.

but anyhow...... if you said you smelled the exhaust and there is no hint of antifreeze smell only diesel smell its defiantly fuel related then. and i know white smoke usually means fuel is not up to temp. im sure there are other reasons that it could happen. but im not a expert on the fuel system yet i haven't had to touch mine since i bought it except for the fuel return lines (can get from pensecola for 20 bucks) (some people prefer autozones kit though its more expensive.)

i bought autozone's kit and have not had any issues with it (i had to replace some o-rings but that was my fault i put the caps on wrong and cut them)
there may be some related issues between leaking fuel lines and the smoke your seeing but im sure the fuel system experts will come along shortly......
