My 1999 F250 LD has a stock gauge cluster with no tachometer. I'm curious if anyone knows if it's already wired for a gauge cluster with a tach or if i should just buy an aftermarket one to mount on the dash,
also, if i have to buy an aftermarket, does anyone how i hook it up, or atleast know where i can find that information, i've never had to hook up a tach that wasn't already there
I'm not sure I can answer all your questons but the stock tach gets it signal from the computer, not like the old days from the ignition pulses off one coil.
This make it part of the original build hardware and softwere.
You may be able to get tach hardware from a vendor just for this purpose that will sample one igniton lead since there are 8 coils on a coil over system or 2 coil packs for 4 cylinders each, not one, to work with.
Look at MSD for this possibility, not in your local auto store.
Good luck.
alright i'll try there, I also found a fun little trick for anyone with this year truck (not sure about any truck but atleast my model) if you have a digital odometer, insert your key and press the trip button and hold it for a few seconds, then turn the key to the on position still holding the trip button. after about 5 seconds the odometer turns into a very useful tool, you can then turn on your truck and when you press the trip button it will cycle through a few options, 1 of which is a digital tach.
so anyone who has read this far and understood, is there possibly a way to tap into this with a tachometer?
There is a signal wire for a tach.
I added a tach to my '01 E-350.
The van had a pink/black stripe wire marked with a tag in the bundle on the firewall.
