My brother has a 1979 2wd with 302 and parts store says it has a c5 trans. Can that be correct? Can a c4 or c6 be installed in place of a c5 or is the c5 an ok trans? Also, where is a good place to buy rebuilt Ford transmissions? Thanks
i dont belive its correct because the C5 was in the later models like 1982-1984 Ford Rangers and 1982-1986 1/2 ton F-series, its pretty much the same as a c4 except it has a lock up torque converter, measure the length of the trans, from the beginning of the bellhousing and the seam that separates the bell housing from the tran body a c5 is around 7'' and a c4 is around 6 1/4'', now to determine if its a c5 or c6 count the oil pan bolts, a c6 will have 17, and c4 and c5 use 11 bolts, hope this helps!
I have a C5 sitting in the barn that came on my '76 F150 w/390.. There must have been some built earlier to bolt up to the F.E.
It has since been changed to a stouter C6 I got from TCI... As far as rebuilt transmissions go, The best one I ever had done was by a bored retired trans re-builder for the price of the kit and a few bucks to help him enjoy the process... 8)
