Yes, it will and cause enough problem to stall the engine or burn exhaust valves. I don't normally condone removal of a cat but gutting one that is dying, well, the law states that you can't remove a "functioning" catalytic converter. One with the guts rattling around blocking up the system is no longer functioning so go for it. Mine has been that way for several years and still passed emissions tests here for two or three years with the guts gone. Now it doesn't have to pass anymore. Anything older than 1996 around here is not subject to emissions testing.

No audible difference, only the gain I would have gotten if I had replaced the one with the broken substrate. Catalytic converters, CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, are completely PASSIVE. Clogged catalytic converters are NOT. So I guess you could say I got back what was always there when the blockage caused by the cracked substrate was cleared.

As for gutting it, mine is a Bassani stainless y-pipe and high flow cat all welded together. I used an old microphone stand (I'm in the entertainment biz, its what I had laying around) to ram up the output side of the pipe til splinters and fragments began to rain back out of it. The fact that I could extend and lock the stand to make it long enough to reach all the way through the cat was nice for getting the last chunk to break out. Once the thing stopped rattling, I knew there was nothing left inside.
