Hey everyone, I have a 2004 F-250 SD 4x4 with approx 60,000 miles. I recently noticed a strange noise (clunk) from the front. When slamming on the brakes or even applying regular pressure the truck starts to slow down then as it is coming to a stop I hear a loud clunk. It sounds like its coming from the front drivers side underneath my feet (i can almost feel it on my foot through the pedal). If I apply slight pressure slowly on the brakes it does not make the sound and sometimes it doesnt make the sound if I slam on them as well. It started doing this before I did the front brakes and continued after I replaced them. The calipers are tight, so could it be suspension, lube???? Any ideas would be appreciated thanks!
I would look at the sway bar bushings, two or four wheel drive, my two wheel drive has to have the sway bar attachments points on the frame greased every 6 or 8 thousand miles or it clunks real bad.
I had same issue, I replaced Sway bar bushings. Then another clunk ended up being ball joints. Now another clunk and it's the front leaf spring bushings!!
Not sure on the driveline design on the 04's but if its the same as the 03s and older, then there is a slipjoint in the driveline with a boot around it. This is a known issue to cause a "thunking" sound when starting and stopping. Basically all you do is cut the bands that hold the boot on, slide it out of the way and grease up the splines. Then put the boot back in place and secure it with zip ties. Service bulletin on that as well.
