Sorry can't help ya, but glad to see you're looking to go with an FE! forget those other options. FE all the way, I didn't respond to your other post because I already knew I was too biased. You've already got everything you need to put one in your 78 so there's no way I could've told you 351w or 400. lol
Hope you find one. Are they really that rare around there?
i found 3 so far in 3 months, one was sitting tore apart for years, the other was smoking, and i dont remember what was wrong with the other one. all going for about 450 bucks. pull a part in louisville had a bunch of them last time i went and i was in the process of pullin one when i seen the price on the website and there was different and i didnt have enough money on me. i might head back up there shortly and look. hope i didnt miss out. they had about 8 of them last time
ok, heres a question...whats the difference in size from a 390 and 410 piston? and if i decide to go that route IF it dont require boring and i use the stock 410 pistons and rods what CR would that be around? i dont want to build a motor that has to run off premium, im not rich haha
the difference is in pin height. I'm not exactly sure on the numbers but I'm pretty sure the 410 pistons give you like 8:1 or something close. Not very desireable in a 390. There is a big difference in static compression and dynamic compression. DCR has much more to do with how an engine will actually act. You could have a 10.5:1 run off 87oct with a long duration cam and less timing, and a 8.5:1 ping itself to death with poorly matched parts. It's all about when valves close and open. If you do a search on this forum there are a few threads discussing the piston selection. I believe if you put 360 flat tops in a 390 it will net 9.5:1 SCR. And then you can select a cam that fits that CR.
after rereading your post, are you wanting to stroke it to a 410? or just pistons? if just the pistons you won't need the rods. Just use the 390 rods.
