Converting to single tank

Hi everyone. My 89 E-150 conversion has a fuel tank with some really bad gas in it. The tanks switch back and forth and everything, but the back tank is loaded with varnish smelling gasoline. I had been planning on replacing that tank with the one it comes with, but I read on another thread about people doing a conversion over to a 35 gallon tank that came in the Broncos. I think doing this type of conversion would be best in the long run. Why have two tanks where things can go wrong instead of just one?

Anyway, I know I would need the tank, the sending unit, and probably the tank pump (if they came with one), but what all is involved with doing this type of conversion? I have never done anything like that before, so I really have no clue.

SOmething I forgot to mention is that the tanks I've looked up have different size openings. How do I know which one to get? They offer them with 2 inch and 3.63 inch openings. I am assuming the opening is where the sending unit would go, correct?

Also, let's say I get the tank, sending unit, filler hose, and straps. That would still leave the issue of the fuel line itself. If memory serves me correctly, these EFI vehicles don't use regular rubber hoses for the fuel line. They have steel lines with clips that fit on the nipple. How would I deal with that issue? I looked for fuel line on Oreilly's site, but couldn't find anything that looked like it would work.

Well, I thought someone would have some information on doing this change over. I guess I will stick with the system it currently has. I did some more looking last night, and there are differences in the plugs on the sending units. I was hoping that switching over to a one tank set up would be easy, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

While this site is a busy one but the van forum is not as visited as some of the other topics so you may have to wait a day or two to get an answer.

It's OK. The van is grounded until the weather warms up and I can replace the belt tensioner anyway. It's in the teens here right now, but it's supposed to get better by the weekend--40s.
