new to this site hope im gettin this right . the problem i have is with my72 f250 ranger its a 360 AT and last smmr the horn relay mnted next to the solenoid came in contact with a terminal post on the solenoid. the surge it caused fried my H2O sensor and gauge . I replaced it and the solenoid ,volt reg , relay and ign swtch. Checkd all wiring found no obvious issues there. Now when batt is connectd the truck is tryin to start without the key in the ignition. If any one has an idea what has happened i sure could use the help . I have been using my daughters 77 f100 as a test subject but can't duplicate or find any answers
I accidentally hooked up the two smaller wires that go to the starter relay backward, then as soon as I hooked the battery up, the starter started going.
thnx , i thought that i had those correctly connected but maybe i need to dbl chk that one ,but would that still occur without the key in the ign stch?
The two little wires are the one towards the front activates the solenoid -- when the ignition key is turned it sends a low amp 12V signal to the solenoid which causes the high amp 12V to go to the starter. The small terminal to the rear takes a 12V signal while the solenoid is activated and trying to start and sends a full 12V signal to the coil. If these two small wires get reversed not much will happen -- the joke used to be if you were messin' with someone that had one of these trucks you would switch the wires and the poor victim couldn't figure out why it wouldn't do anything.
Anyhow, unless something went wrong with the rest of the harness and 12V is continouosly going to the little front wire, then the solenoid is bad and stuck. If you disconnect the front wire and the starter is still running then the solenoid is definitely bad. I've had this happen more than once, so it's not unusual.
apologies for takin so long to reply weather here kept me away frm my truck. Anyway you guys were right did have the solenoid wires reversed, but now i have another problem. Checkd all my new parts over everything fine, new batt, and switched the solenoid with a working one off daughters f100. However now i have no power to anything no lights gauges nuttin. Could the problem be one of the fuse links , or a ground wire issue ? Have poured over the wiring schematics and can't find areason why power is not there. Any help would be appreciated and hopefully the weather will cooperate so i can figger this thing out.
Check the fuse links; they should be connected to solenoid where the battery cable connects. You'll have to probe the wires with a test light to see if the link burned out.
If they did burn out I'd try to figure out why before you just replace them, they never fail for no reason.
