i wet sanded my rims sprayed them with dupli color high performance wheel coating from auto zone, oriley , napa etc then just sprayed them with the color and cleared um they came out really nice hope that helps out a lil bit
When I painted rims at my neighbors shop with the tires on here is what I did. 1st mark location of wheel weights on tires. Remove the weights. I used a small handheld sand blasting rig (kinda looked like a garden sprayer) and blasted rust spots. Feather sanded the rest of the rim. I used a piece of sheet metal about 3" wide to form a loop around the rim ontop of the tire. This masked off the tire real easy. Clean rim with a wax/grease remover (Like PPG 320) The used good acrylic primer. Then we just spray bombed them. Reinstall weights after paint dries. As for the trim ring, I just used some straight enamel (or lightly thinned it) and used an artist brush to apply the paint.
