In my cooling system trials lately, I have been using a Gatorade bottle with the bottom cut off as a funnel when filling the radiator. The top of the bottle fits snuggly in the top of the radiator. It's not completely watertight, but it's close. That 3 1/2 - 4" opening is a lot easier to hit than the radiator opening. It also serves as an overflow when the thermostat opens up with the rad cap off. It mostly blocks the overflow outlet, so all the coolant goes right back into the radiator.
On the topic of burping,I recently put in a new heater core. After a 25 mi commute,I hear a thumping sound coming from the thermostat area.Sounds almost like the T-stat slamming shut. .I can't tell if it does it at highway speed for the road noise.Everything else is good, temp stays betwee N-R,no loss of coolant anywhere, decent heat. Would air in the system cause this?
FWIW, after an hour of unsuccessfully trying to disconnect the q/d heater hose fittings,I finally twisted the core back and forth til the necks snapped off, pulled em back out through the firewall, put the new core in,slid the hoses back down the "spaghetti box" and pushed til I heard that oh so satisfying click.
FWIW II,my downshifting at highway speed problem was cured by a nused
gauge cluster.Your results may vary.
