My son has a 95 f-350 PSD, and I have a 97 f-250 PSD, and we have been told by different shops that there is a difference between the computers with the two model years. Anybody out there can give us some input as to differences.
Big one is the "programs" in the two is different. Also, the 97 is supposed to be OBDII compliant so it will "speak" a different language.
If you want ALL the details, I'd suggest calling one of the custom "tunes" guys that work with these things every day as there won't be a better source than someone who uses these things everyday.
Biggest difference is the 94.5 - 95 OBDII port in the cab is not active. Plug and wiring to the PCM (computer) is there but the programming is not. You could take the 95 PCM and have it reflashed to a 96 - 97 version then the OBDII port would be active. Other than that you should be able to swap PCM's and everything should work, assuming both rigs have the same transmission, auto or standard.
Another difference would be if you have a Cali (California model) truck in which case the 97 would use split shot injectors and the programming would be different to fire those injectors properly.

If they're both 49-state emissions trucks with the same transmission, swap the computers and do your own comparisons. If your son's truck has ever been reflashed at a dealer, it's likely now the same as the one in the 97.
Otherwise you'll likely feel a HUGE difference in the way the truck shifts (if they're both automatics).
