Got a '97 PSD. Troubles started last year when it would't fire up with the ignition switch. Mechanic looked at it, and said that the wiring was all messed up, so rather than dick with it he put in a remote start switch, as I needed it for plowing. I had smelt burned wires too.
Fast forward to this winter. Truck was running and died, #22 fuse was blown. Symptoms were no movement on tach when using the remote starter, transmission light on, no WTS light, also occaisonally both ABS and Brake lights would come on when it had been running, but brakes worked fine. Replaced fuse and all symptems disappeard, and plowed all day, no problems. Got home, shut it down, went in to have lunch, came out and went to start it. Fired right up, made one pass in the yard, went to back up and it died. Same symtoms as above. Replaced fuse and still no start, had symptoms still.
Thought it might have been the CPS, replaced that, no go. Double checked all fuses and swapped relays around. Still no go.
Pretty sure it's the ignition switch as it caused problems last year. However, what else should I check? PCM? IDM?, anything else?
Thanks, I'll give it a shot, but the #22 fuse hasn't blown since I replaced it the second time, and would that cause the other symptoms (tranny light on, no movement on tach, no WTS)?

the fuse causes for sure no WTS, no tach moving points to CPS(camshaft position sensor) not sure on the other things. think there are more things messed up due to the wiring problems.

First all, thanks for the help. Looks like it was the fuel heater and bad fuses. Disconnected the heater, and ttied yet another fuse, and had WTS light. Plugged in block heater and it fired up after a couple of hours.
Already did, and it won't be replaced till spring/summer. It was -20 here in Nova Scotia today. Just plugged in the block heater for 3 hrs. and it fired right up. Suits me, I sure don't feel like replacing the heater in the middle of winter!
Funny thing is that I just bought a new JD 2305 Tractor as I have to keep our 1/2 mile road clear, and have contracts to do. Guess what, the tractor needs a service call with 11 hrs. on the clock, low on trannie fluid due to a leak.

If the fuse blows again, I would disconnect the fuel heater like Michael said, until you fix the element
